View Full Version : CX-90 tenor, anyone?

I've reached the conclusion that one tenor is enough for my stable (and I may even cull the alto and soprano herd a bit, but those will be different threads).

With my Dynaction gone to a new home, and my SX-90R languishing in the "I'm awfully spread and loud for legit" corner of my closet, I'm wondering if there is a better choice. I love this horn, but it served best as a partner to the Dynaction.

I'm thinking CX-90, but I can't find one anywhere short of Germany, and at a ridiculously high price. Does anyone have insight on these horns? Will they be more like a true SX-90 or more like the JK/Buffet alto version that was called "Prestige" and was badged as a Buffet? I have one of these, and it's a great classical horn. (I'm betting this horn becomes the CX-90 alto with no changes except engraving and bell brace.) I'm just wondering if the tenor will lean toward the SX-90 sound or the Prestige sound, and whether the tenor will have the same or similar differences from the SX-90 that the alto Prestige has (bore/pitch and keywork). Does anyone have the scoop?

Hi!

I had a chance to try among other Keilwerth tenors the CX-90 on the Sax World Congress in Ljubljana, Slovenia this year. It was still a prototype and I can’t remember very well because I was more focused trying different necks for my Shadow tenor, but it’s much mellower and not so loud then the usual SX90(r)-s, still the keywork is ,if I remember correctly, the same as the sx90 and the sound core is definitely a Keilwerth-spread.
To be sure, ask the Keilwerth customer service, they usually answer emails or Stehpan Bösken, he is able to give very precise explanations about the sound and keywork.

I did contact Stephan, and he confirmed that these tenors have full SX90 keywork. He has yet to play one but has one incoming. I may just have to go for it.

But then, what to do with my existing SX90R?

What vintage is your SX90R? Maybe I'll buy it!!!

If you play the CX let us know your impressions.

m3pilot, check your PMs. If I do get hold of the CX90, I'll post an extensive review. Just keep in mind I'm really an alto player and not even very good at that (but I'm getting better and my wife loves me).

The alto is a killer.
I tried one of Mr. Keilwerth's with a silver neck and was totally smitten.

That is tempting. The CX models have a different bore, correct? I thought I remembered someone saying that the were different from the SX models. I love my SX90R alto, but was really taken by the "sweeter" tone of the Ref 54. The CX might be a nice one to try.

Randall, does it have different ergos to SX90s?

Rick the one I tried is a bit older than the ones being discussed here.
It was offically an SX90RC. The ergos and keywork were greatly modified as it was Mr. Keilwerths prototype/pet. Man you should have seen the bells and whistles on that thing!

I am fairly sure that the JK produced copper horns now will have to have a different bore from the BC horns they produced because of the pitch difference. The JK horns are 440. The BC horns were 442.

Heh, I've never seen a sax with more than one bell before, and never a whistle ;)

Seriously, it must have been interesting. I note that the Keilwerth web site states...

Ergonomical optimised keywork [for] high playing comfort

..which they don't state for the SX90s.

Rick I cannot reveal the details on that horn because it has some innovations that JK doesn't want to be public yet, but it was really neat.

FWIW, Mr. K lurks here, but never posts.;)

Well I love a mystery... I know - can it play a four part harmony plus fills when you solo? :)

It looks like a piece of plumbing. I'm sure it sounds good, though.

I'd really like to do a side by side comparison with an A-992, Series III and/or a YAS-875EX with that alto. How tough would that be to decide on the right one to buy? Lots of great choices to spend your cash.

There goes the retirement plan

I have the CX90 alto's predecessor, which was a Buffet/Keilwerth hybrid sold as the Buffet Prestige. It has several Buffet S1 features (notched neck, LH table) but the majority of the keywork is SX90. The RH stack key touches are beveled and tilted to produce a smaller feeling horn. It plays great, easy blowing and sweet, somewhere between an S1 and an SX90 (as you might expect). I don't now if the models being sold as CX90s have the same keywork setup as my Prestige or if it's the same as the SX90. It could of course be another variant with features of both. I really need to try the CX90 in both alto and tenor and see if they outdo the current SX90Rs (Anni alto, clear nickel tenor) and the Prestige. There's just something about that copper tube that works for me.
