Our local jazz station featured her tonight.. she blows a mean sax and from what I've read she's drop dead gorgeous! She's worked with Candy Dulfer, John Tesh and Jonathan Butler. So what's the downstroke on this gal? Anyone know anything about her?

AJL..

As you're no doubt aware now, that's the name of her debut(?) CD. I picked it up just a few days ago. Not too bad. It's got a bit of the fungus effect (it grows on you!) going for it. I can definitely hear the Dulfer influence on a few tracks, too. For me, I think the faves would be the title track, and the one that precedes it.

As an aside, I feel her vocals could use some rethinking. I know she's quite young, but I don't feel that she needs to use such a "bubble gum" tone to show it :roll:

I'll have to watch for her next CD!

Great eye candy, but there wasn't a single picture of her actually playing her alto. Just sexy-cutie shots.

AJ, some more info from her bio;

Born on tour with her father’s band, Mindi Abair spent the next four years growing up in every hotel across America. A bit of a child prodigy, she was already playing piano and singing by the age of five. By the age of eight, she added the saxophone, wrote her first songs, and started doing sessions in her father’s studio.
It’s not by chance that Abair fell in love with music. Her father played saxophone, keyboards, and bass, touring and operating his own recording studio. Her grandmother was an opera singer. Abair worked her way through college singing and playing in Boston clubs and performed every style of music from R&B, jazz, and big band to pop and rock.
Abair says:
“I wanted to experience it all. I had been influenced by all of those styles. I wanted to add depth to my musicianship and experience. I've gone through phases of who was my musical hero at what time. I’ve gone from Blondie and the Go Gos to Miles Davis and Cannonball Adderley to Mozart, the Beatles, David Bowie, and bands like Garbage and Portishead. Now I listen to just about everything. I think all of these influences create a depth of inspiration and musical possibility for me as an artist, songwriter and musician.”
Upon graduating magna cum laude with a degree in peformance from Berklee College of Music in Boston, Abair moved directly to Los Angeles, where she now resides. She immediately formed her own band and began playing the Los Angeles clubs.
In her short but impressive career, she’s played and toured with an incredibly diverse roster of artists that includes the Gap Band, Bobby Lyle, Teena Marie, Jonathan Butler, John Tesh, Carl Anderson, Maysa, Rick Braun, Adam Sandler, Mandy Moore, and the Backstreet Boys. She has also been featured with these artists on the MTV Music and Movie Awards, The Tonight Show, The Rosie O’Donnell Show, MadTV, Melrose Place, as well as in television specials with Adam Sandler and Mandy Moore. You can hear her on “The Lonesome Kicker” which appears on Adam Sandler’s CD What's Your Name?, Bobby Lyle’s release “The Power of Touch”, and on the Backstreet Boys’ video “For the Fans.”
While touring with other artists, Abair has faithfully worked on her own music, culminating with her debut CD Love, released on her website www.mindiabair.com in 1999. Her exposure to over five million Backstreet Boys fans throughout the entire Millennium Tour caused her website to explode with over a million hits resulting in thousands of downloads and CD sales. Everyone wanted to know, “Where can I buy your CD?” Abair’s most recent CD, Always and Never the Same, was released in 2000 to rave reviews. After its release, Abair went on tour again, this time with her band, opening for the wildly successful April 2000 Johnny No Name tour featuring AJ McLean of the Backstreet Boys.
She has been featured as a solo artist on efanguide.com, kiwibox.com, rollingstone.com, farmclub.com, musicmatch.com, estrogenmusic.com, mp3.com, thewomenofmp3.com, Backstage Pass magazine, the St. Petersburg Times, Music Connection magazine, and Korg Proview. Four of her songs held the #1 spot on almost every chart on mp3.com for over a week, only to be booted off by Paul Simon. She has done numerous chats on different sites, but Kiwibox’s chat with Abair drew over 3,600 questions in one hour for the up-and-coming artist. Abair was featured in Hot magazine’s June 2001 issue.
Abair’s music has been featured on MTV’s Undressed and will be featured in an upcoming episode of Fanatic Undercover. Her music was also featured on KLOS 95.5 Local Licks in Los Angeles in February 2001.
Abair is a diversely talented individual who has climbed the ranks of the music industry on her own inspiration, ambition, and love for music. Her songs are inspired and thoughtful, catchy as hell and fun. She has been described as the “Millennium Blondie.” She is the perfect combination of in-your-face lyrics, attitude, and poignant, self-confessional moments. Take a listen.

I just got her CD the other day (finally, almost a month after the release for which I had placed a preorder). She's definitely a good player, can't take that away from her. Sounds like she spent a lot of time in the shed. Her style is authentic (doesn't sound like she's trying to be like someone else), has good control and nice tone, plays well in tune, on both alto and soprano. I wish her the best of luck. We need more hot women (who can actually play) on the saxophone scene today!

I got her cd a little while back. I really like it. I think track 2 and track 6 are my favorites. I use the cd as background music on my Xbox. Makes great music to race to!
