I personally do not recommend it. I tried it the other day, and I didn't like it. Go ahead if you want though.

Just curious where you found one out east? I play B&S horns and love them both (now they are set up to my taste). I suppose budget comes into it though, for what I paid ($1000 and $1600) there is nothing better, and Ive played far more expensive horns that I wouldnt trade them for.

Personal taste I suppose, thats why play testing is always the recomended course of action ....having said that I bought mine without trying them first and have no regrets.

If I was buying new though I would probably avoid the earthtone finish given what I know now. Much as it looks great when new (well, my opinion anyway), it does spot up and degrade faster than I would like...there are some pics of the issues in my gallery here;

Of course, you dont play the finish, so its a subjective thing...

Man, these are excellent horns, if they are the originals made by B&S. Now, I tried one at the same time as I tried a Keilwerth and preferred the JK, but that's just personal taste. These are very good saxes.

Long and McQuade has a used section in their 'band' products. They bought it off of a guy over at Eastern Shore.

I just got a brand new Medusa Gold Brass alto(with silver bell and bow and 3 necks) and must say it is the best sounding alto I ever played and I have had about every pro horn new and vintage known to man.Useing a Bay hard rubber mouthpiece the tone is big and lush with a beautiful edge up high.Key action great.B&S did make 1 screw up with this.They used imitation MOP.I know of 2 more gold lacquered Medusa altos brand new at a great price.I can give you email address of person who has them.My cell number is 731 607 3147. Ask for John

They're great horns when you get a good one. Personally, I liked the GoldBrass models less than the others.

They vibrate a lot, so just make sure your screws stay tight or you could lose one.

I finally got the chance to play a second B&S tenor recently. This is the only one that I have played other than my own (sandblast CJS tenor). I was shocked....it was stuffy and mellow! Mine is very resonant, dark, and will develop a nice edge when pushed hard. There were no obvious leaks and the action was a bit smoother than my horn. I can see how this would account for the widely-varying opinions on these horns. Yet again, it depends on the horn you try.

Sounds like the Mk VI Variability .
