OK Folks, we just added the RooPads to our website. After showing them around (as well as showing instruments with the RooPads in them around) at the world Saxophone Congress there is a great deal of excitement brewing about these pads.
The RooPad don't stick and they hit the tone holes with very quietly. Couple that with the the strongest leather commercially available and a very firm pressed felt and you've got a great pad! Check out the site if you get a chance and let me know if you have any questions.
I should have a list of repair shops that carry the RooPads soon as well as more information about them on the website.
Thanks!

Curt,
Russ has some on order for my Buescher tenor that he is overhauling for me. I can't wait to give them a try. Are you still working on a metal backed version?

I sure am but it will be a little while. Although I have made metal backed RooPads (some folks call them BuescheRoo's) they were all made with the old backs from pads. I am working on something better.
I have put the RooPads pads in several Bueschers without any problems. The feel is great and the fact that they don't stick and make pad noise is a big plus. I'm doing a Big B alto now. I hope you like them when you get your horn back!

Russ does really nice work so I'm sure that the pads will be the topping on the cake. Just ship the pads to him quickly! I'm itching to play!

Curt,
I've heard that the roo's on a Buescher can make the sound too dark. How does the sound compare to the regular Buescher pads with snaps?

Are these things made from poor cute little kangaroos?!
I guess I never thought too much about where my pads come from before, but Skippy!?
What's next? DuckPads? PuppyPads? BabyBunnyPads?!
Will the horrors never cease?

Actually Kangaroo is a good choice. There are so many of them that they are hunted for the sole purpose of decreasing their numbers. The Baby Goat pads that you currently have in your Saxophone are much less environmentally friendly as far as I can tell. They are farmed so trees must be cut down to facilitate that. They are raised in captivity as well. Also, the Skin is less suited for the purpose of making saxophone pads.
TopHat,
I have found that the felt under the leather is a big factor in the sound that the pads produce and how much sound they absorb. With a more firm leather, I find that the RooPads do absorb some of the higher harmonics but not much. I recently overhauled my Conn Bari with the RooPad with moderate sizes Resos. The Firm RooPads did not seem to affect my projection.
I played that Bari at the Cardinal Saxophone Workshop with the RooPads in it. I did not have anyone telling me to 'play out'.
Also, I recently did a Buescher Transitional with the RooPads. I used only the snaps and did not change the resos. It's projection is fine. I am doing a Buescher Big B Alto (that I will sell) now with the RooPads. I will let you know. If projection is a concern in general, I add larger metal disks under the resos. This solves the problem no matter what type of pads that I am putting in a Buescher.
For the "regular" instruments (non-Buescher) one can adjust the Resos accordingly.
