View Full Version : Otto Link STM Reface...

Although it isn't my main piece, I'm considering getting a reface on my Otto Link STM. I had been switching off between it and my Guardala Post-Bop...but found that it didn't have nearly the presence or precise articulation that I want in a mouthpiece. Still, I think it could be a great mouthpiece if the tip and side rails were thinned out and it just got a general reface.
I've heard good stuff about Adam Niewood, Theo Wanne...etc. Anyone got any good suggestions?

Looks to me like everyone seems to have good experiences with:
either Mojo - http://mojomouthpiecework.com/
or Ed Zentera - http://saxmaniax.com/ (http://saxmaniax.com/mpcreface.htm)

I have had excellent results from both and I would add one more: Doc Tenney (check with saxquest.com).

My own personal experiences are with Doc Tenney and Adam Niewood, and both do impeccable work.

I've played Tenney and Mojo Links, and both were very, very good mouthpieces. You wouldn't go wrong with either.

I vote for Ed Zentera. He communicates the entire way, listens to the player, has fast turn-around time, and does excellent work.

Thanks guys for the advice! This is one of many things I don't know a whole lot about--and am really glad to have this forum for advice!

Here's another vote for Ed, who recently sold me a Dukoff mouthpiece.
Last I checked, Theo Wanne wasn't taking on any new mouthpiece work, per his website. Has that changed?
The others mentioned on this thread have great reputations also, so you should be fine with any of the people suggested.
I've had great experiences with Doc Tenney's mouthpieces. I've had mouthpieces refaced by Theo (hard rubber Links), and I've been playing on a hard rubber Link that was worked on by Ted Klum (Adam Niewood's mentor)as my main tenor mouthpiece for the past year or so. Theo is around, but he's been busy developing his Wanne mouthpiece line. I would get in touch with either Doc or Adam - either one will do a GREAT job on your Link.

I've got to put in a plug for SOTW's own, Dave Spiegalthal. Coincidentally, I just got a STM Link back from him. He refaced it, thinned the rails, and even silver plated the area exposed by the reface, all for a very affordable price. Dave is really moving up in this refacing business and is a great guy to work with. Highly recommended!

I am also looking to have work done on my Link. On Ed Zentera site, I looked at a Link he modified. Is this the common mod for a Link other than the usual table work and such?

Baffle and window work are the other main areas that need fixing on most STM Links.

Dave Tondi purchased the business from Theo.

I had MOJO do a reface on my Link STM for the same reasons that you list. He fixed the rails and table, even added a baffle.
Now, I finally understand everyone's Link fascination.

Bootman did up a Link STM for me that is incredible, (my current main piece) Don't know if he is taking on this kind of work.
I've also had Mojo work on a couple pieces for me, great work and great guys, both!

Ed made me a NY link in a .107 that is just so good. I wrote about this piece a while back in the "Ed Zentera thread" but it's been several months since then, and it definitely wasn't just a "honeymoon period" thing--the sound keeps getting better and better. My teachers at school agree...On top of that, he's a great guy to deal with and has helped me out a great deal with giving me good deals and also with tons of free setup advice. Actually, if I acquire this soprano piece he's letting me try, then I will be playing EZ'd pieces on SATB. I can't recommend him highly enough!
