Right now I'm using an Otto Link STM 5* that I've had for about 30 years. I took a 22 year layoff from sax and I've noiticed that most sax players are using more open mpc's today than 30 years ago.

So I've seen the Bari 6* on sale, and a variety of others but I don't really understand the numbering system of all these companies. I've also never used anything but metal on tenor, I've only used rubber on alto and metal on tenor.

Any recomendations?

Companies arbitrarily set up a numbering system to quantify the openness at the tip (the facing), or they copy another company's system, or they actually tell you exactly what it is (what a concept!).

You can find charts here to compare:

As for finding the right mouthpiece... I suggest you go to a dealer in your area to try different facings and styles or get a few on trial from WWBW.

After a 22 yr layoff, you should start by working out on smaller set-ups. After you get some chops endurance, you can explore wider tips.

Also, be aware that not only the tip opening varies, but also the length and curve of the lay. What this means is that tip opening is merely one factor in the equation over whether you will feel comfortable with the mouthpiece, and what type and strength of reed will match it for you. Think of the reed as a lever on the facing; if it is more open, you have more work to do, but this is partly offset if the lay is correspondingly longer. With some makes, the lay and opening move in step up through the grades and within reason, you can use the same reed on several openings, I certainly found this so with the Selmer mouthpieces. The Otto Link feels to me to have a relatively short lay, I am not sure if the Bari is even vaguely similar. You are opening Pandora's box here, just see all the posts on mouthpieces! If you are happy with your playing and sound on that faithful friend, then stick with it.
