Hi, i was wondering if any of the gurus out there who have experience with Jody Jazz ESP.100 can tell me what reeds can go well with this piece?
Thanks!

I use mostly Rico Grand Concert Select 2.5, or Vandoren Trad 2.5 or 3. These are classical cut reeds that I find work well on this facing.
I haven't tried many others, these are what I was using before and I continued when I got the ESP .100. I have to say I do use slightly softer reeds than a lot of other players do. I think I should experiment a bit more as I haven't been getting on as well with the ESP as I would like.

Hi single reed, from what i asked Jody, he recommend Rico Jazz select. Some players here also felt that this reed work well with ESP to give a jazzy, bright sound.
There are also a few who recommended Alexander DC reeds for a darker sound.
I have ordered both to give it a try to see which one i like. :)
Thanks!

I can recommend Daniel's reeds with ESP tenor, which give me a full and edgy sound with good projection. I use 3 1/2 strength with .110 tip opening, but appreciate that this may be a little strong for many players. These reeds can vary in strength and sometimes play soft, but the number of playable reeds per box is high and I think you will be impressed with the sound produced over all registers - I love 'em :D
I have recently tried Phat reeds, which play a little hard but have a great contemporary sound - I use 2 1/2 strength with these - they are well worth a try on your ESP.

Daniels are an Italian make and I got some from reeds-direct.co.uk. Mine were for clarinet and were quite awful, they must have had a temporary production problem at the time because I have heard other people say they like them. Phat are the new ones that Steve Goodson is distributing, made in China - a few retailers are just beginning to get them, I think you will find a thread on them under 'reeds'.
Come to think of it, I did run some Jazz Select on my ESP and they were great, I must get some more!

Thanks Sattva!
Be sure to give the Vandoren V-16 reeds a try (probably around 2 1/2 for a .100 opening). I find these to work best for me on just about any mouthpiece.
Hi,
The best for me on the ESP are the Van Doren Blue Box 2.5, nice dark jazzy sound (check my WWW site for samples)
Good ones also are : Alexander DC and Rico Jazz Select.

I don't know about the tenor, but I like RJS on my ESP alto piece. Smooth, baby, smooth.

Hi,
I've found Rico Plasticovers work quite well with these pieces. It brightens up the darker sound of these pieces, if that's what you like. I use a 2.5 on an alto 90 and switch between a 2 and 2.5 on a tenor 120.

Hi guys thanks for all the wonderful wealth of info.
I have placed some orders for RJS and Alexander DC.
Now i am using the vandoren blue box reeds (2.5) Marc was using.
And yes Marc, i have checked out your website and i love your dark smooth and sensuous tone of yours. Working towards that kinda of sound.
Hey man Marc keep playing and do post more of your stuff, looking forward to that :)

Hi there, this prompted me to try some new reeds on my JJ ESP .100. I found the Rico JS 2H filed gives a good sound but wih quite a lot of resistance, a good physical experience for the kind of music when you want to work hard to play. I also tried some Marca Jazz 2.5 and really like these on my ESP. They are very responsive and are great for a more laid back sound, but it is also bright and lively sounding. I really like these. Note, though, that I play reeds a bit softer than many players do. The Marca 2.5 definitely feels quite a bit softer than the Rico JS 2H, but the cut is different too, so it wouldn't necessarily feel that way on other mouthpieces - for example on my 8* Link copy, the Rico was far brighter than the Marca which was hard work on that mouthpiece. I bought some Marca Jazz for alto too and found them just as responsive, a good find!
