Okay...I don't really want anything special...but I want a good mouthpiece with a darker sound...I was thinking the Selmer S80 or Eugene Rousseau Classical or New Classical mouthpiece...what do you think?

Madsax: I have both and don't care for either one, especially after acquiring three Selmer Super Sessions in J-facings. As to "dark", who knows? I think a lot of that is what we WANT to hear and our playing concept (and the reed used).
Of the two you mentioned, I like the S-80s better, but mouthpiece desires are very personal indeed. What I like may not suit you at all. DAVE

I would second Dave Dolson's suggestion of Selmer Super Session in "J" facing. It can play darkly and is not too expensive. Also, on sopranos the tone and intonation are touchier than on other saxes, so you may have some trouble adjusting to a new mouthpiece. The variations in each person's oral cavity and embouchure play a big role in what you get.
Happy playing!

I gotta say it: try the BARI Esprit. It only costs $8 or $10, and it plays as well as some $70 and $80 mouthpieces!

Or, on the slightly more expensive side, I'd try a Tenney hard rubber Otto Link. I've not played anything that comes close to it's even tone and versatility.

The Selmer Metal Classic for soprano is also an excellent mouthpiece, as is their Super Session; both of which I have. I use a 'G' facing on my Metal Classic and it can play very dark without the quacking quality of other metal soprano mouthpieces.

On the advice given here I bought the BARI Esprit. It is a nice piece, played right out of the box. Definately worth having in the case. Don't let the price put you off of it, it is a good piece.
Thanks meruhl.

Another satisfied customer! I really should approach BARI Assoc. about an endorsement contract.
I'm glad it worked out for you, Carl.

I use Caravan for soprano.
It is a large chamber non-jazz mouthpiece with relatively easy altissimo and much flexibility. Easier to blend with quartet, and allows you to start from nothing on low notes without even having to use your tongue.
Around $75, but the best mouthpiece I've come across after trying just about everything out there.
