View Full Version : Transposed my keyboard - is this cheating?

I like to pick out Tenor sax parts using a cheap keyboard instead of the sax itself. Normally I figure the parts on the keyboard but then have to transpose them when writing the parts onto sheets for my Tenor sax.

So yesterday I figured out I can transpose the keyboard any number of semitones, so I set it to -2 so now "C" on the keyboard comes out the speaker as Bb.

Now I can copy directly from the keyboard to the sheets :)

I mentioned this yesterday on another thread. I've recorded a boat-load of "backing tracks" on my Yamaha PSR1000 and stuck 'em on several floppy's. When "busking"* along with 'em on my tenor, most of them I transpose up 2 semitones and on Alto 7. Then the same fingering can be used for each tune. OK you should be able to play a tune in any key, mainly because singers can't sing in more than a few and their "favorite" will be an awkward one for an amateur to use. But I don't play with anyone who sings. Although come to think of it I can play many of 'em without transposing, often because I've forgotten to alter the keyboard setting and I'm too thick to notice that I've not.
*You name a "Sinatra" type jazz standard, I can play it. At my level, I just can't be bothered to learn to read music, when I could be playing a tune instead. For the keyboard, I just read the chord names off the sheet music and "wing" the right hand. No one seems to notice.

There is no such thing as "cheating".

There is only working hard or working smart....
