I was just curious on 'where' everyone plays at. This poll is many for us alto players because there's more options.

When I first learned the sax a video instructed tall folk to play it to the front straight but for short folk to the side since it would definitely come in contact with the crotch area if held in front.

I play my tenor off to the right.
I always think it's funny when air saxophonists play off to the LEFT

It depends. When I sit in a good chair, I play my tenor in front, because I'm quite long fellow. If the chair isnt so good, I play it on the right. When I stand, I play it slightly on the right, against my thigh (or something).
Alto and soprano in the middle, bari or bigger on the right. Though I own only soprano and tenor, anyway.

soprano, alto and tenor in the middle. Bari on the right if I'm on a chair, in the middle when I'm standing.

Sop in the middle, whether standing, sitting, or lying down on the couch...

I play my alto in front when standing, off to the right when sitting in a chair with a backrest. If i'm sitting on a stool I play to the front.

On bari, I don't have much of a choice--it's almost as big as I am. But on tenor, it's pretty much out in front of me.

I position my alto in front when I play. It was the way I was taught. 8)

I started out playing my alto to the side, but somewhere during the first year, I switched during the middle. I don't know why exactly...now I hate playing to the side. On bari, though, I don't have a choice. (I play bari in jazz band and wind ensemble.) I guess it might have come from the fact that I was once a clarinet player. Who knows? 8)

Tenorsaxer,
The air player you saw holding on the wrong side was probably playing "The Air Martin" with the bell keys on the left.

I play it with my teeth, held up above my head. I come from the Jimi Hendrix school of sax playing  (okay, yes I 'fess. I was originally a guitarist - at least I haven't yet tried to set fire to the pads, or ended a gig by smashing my horn threw an amplifier !)
