Hello everyone,
My friend gave me a body of a saxophone, no neck or keys, and I was wondering if anyone can tell me information about it. It says HORACE across the front, and Reg. U.S. Pat. Off. under it. the serial number is 7389, with an LP under it (I'm guessing it stands for Low Pitch?) It was a nice silver but after so many years it's black now. My thoughts are, if it's a nice horn I'll rebuild it, and if it's really sought-after I'll sell it. Anyone with information post here, or if you want pictures or have any other questions email me at dabigbadsaxdaddy@hotmail.com thanks yall! :D

Can't help with ID-ing it, but I would guess it would be almost impossible to rebuild. You can't just buy keywork off-the-shelf, especially not knowing anything about the horn; if you found a donor horn of the same type you may as well rebuild the donor; and to have stuff custom-made wouldn't be economic.

Just be thankful you got it free and use it for decoration!

Hey, here's a very late addition to this thread!

There's a Horace alto on eBay right now -http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=620&item=372683433 3&rd=1 - and it comes with an extra neck!!!!

Buescher made Horace stencils.
On that note, does anyone have a serial number list for Horace? The Buescher list doesn't match Horace.

Martin also made Horace stencils - like this one (http://www.cmelodysax.co.uk/saxophones/gallery/martin-horace.htm). You almost certainly won't find a specific 'Horace' list, and stencil serial numbers don't (as a rule) correspond to the manufacturers 'own' lists.

OK, thanks. Is there any way of knowing if Buescher or Martin made the sax? I'm positive my Horace is a Buescher from the Bueschers I've played.

Impossible to find keys and a neck probably will cost more than a complete horn and they need to fit.

Go here and find the Martin and Buescher links. They will take you to photos of typical attributes of each of the makers' stencil horns. See if yours matches up to one or the other .....

That'd be a pretty good indicator if yours has a few details in the pics....
