I bought a Yanagisawa SC901 about a year ago, and have been looking for a stand for it ever since. I have wondered whether the horseshoe on an alto stand could be squeezed together enough to hold the horn. I also have heard it suggested that a trombone stand could work: secure padding over the top of the stand (microphone windscreens?), turn the saxophone upside down and place the bell over this padding, and then adjust the round rubber thing that is intended to support the bell of the trombone up to support the bell of the sax. Sounds wacky, but it might work.
Has anybody else out there solved this problem? Does anybody know of a commercial product that is specifically made for this purpose, or have you found some other solution? Please feel free to refer me to an archive if it exists; I did not find any in my search.
Thanks!

Exiled: Do an Internet search for Myatt (a music retailer) in the UK. I bought from Myatt a collapsing stand for my curved Yanas and it works great. Before Myatt, I used a Hamilton stand, bent the top horseshoe in to hold the little bell, then moved the bottom support up higher on the brace by drilling higher holes to screw it in. That worked, too, but the horn was high enough off the floor that I was a bit uncomfortable with it.

Dave,
Thanks for your quick response! Is it the "Arbiter" stand that you're talking about? If so, do you know where I can find a picture of it? I'm not having any luck in that search. How was your purchase experience with Myatt?

Exiled: Now that you mention that name (Arbiter), it think that is it.
My deal with Myatt was smooth and easy. I did it over their web-site, used my AMEX card, they billed me in UK Pounds, AMEX made the conversion to U.S. $, and I received the stand in about a week.
The stand is collapsible and folds flat. When opened, it has a triangular shape with the wide part at the bottom. There are two padded hooks on which to rest the instrument, and the horn is close to the floor.
I suppose I could take a few photos and e-mail them to you, if you'd like.

Morry, any chance of getting a photo of the stand without the horn? It's hard to make out the construction with the (very good looking) horn on it.

Thanks, Morry & Dave, for the photos, and source.
I ordered one this morning.

It is a bit hard to see how the stand is held together from Morry's picture, but it looks like the stand is well-padded and the horn appears secure. This one is definitely a contender for some $$. Thanks, guys!

Ok, try this:

Trust me, it's built like a tank.
My only problem was that Myatt shows a price of 20 GBP + shipping, but when I got it, they had charged me 30 GBP + shipping. They never replied to my email about the discrepancy. Oh well, I still love the stand.

Morry: Nice photo. I sent several photos of mine to two SOTW posters. Funny, mine does not have the painetd logo "Arbiter" on it as does yours. Oh well . . . DAVE

It's kind of funny. When you first look at the stand, you think "no way that fits my horn". Then you put the little curvy on it, and it fits like a glove. Best stand/horn matchup on the market. I wish they made a bari stand.

Thomas,
Did Myatt say how long it would take for you to get it?
I didn't ask, but for the price of shipping it should be pretty quick.

Seems like it took about 2 weeks after I placed my order online.

Thanks, Morry, for the picture of the stand alone, and to Dave for sending me some pictures of his stand with and without a horn. It's a bit bothersome that they seem to charge an amount different than what is posted on the site, but I guess a pre-order inquiry could settle that issue.
Does anyone know whether folks in the US have to pay the VAT? I'd guess we don't, but that's just a guess.

SuiZen,
The breakdown Myatt sent me as a receipt is(in GBP)17.02 for the stand,2.98 for the VAT-(they shouldn't charge it on export but it appears they are)and 12.45 for the shipping to the Boston MA area,-i didn't ask what delivery time would be.

I ordered from Myatt on July 2nd and it arrived, today, July 7th. Pretty quick, considering the holiday weekend.
I unwrapped the package, finding the box marked budget guitar stand. You can/cannot imagine what my thoughts were. I opened the box, and it was the Arbiter soprano sax stand.
Very nice, well made stand, as folks described in earlier posts. Holds the sax very well.
Thanks all for the tip.

Great stand, huh?
Absolutely!!!
Next, I've got to get/make a stand for my straight soprano. I'm using a clarinet stand, but it's unstable. Since I have a lathe, I should make one. It'll be my first lathe project, other than making pens.

Bill: There are several staright-sax stands and pegs available - no need to work the lathe unless that winds your clock. I have two pegs with screw-on cross-hatched legs AND I have soprano pegs that merely screw into the leg of a larger alto/tenor stand. No wobble (like a clarinet peg) and very strudy. DAVE

I received my Arbiter curved sop stand yesterday-a week from ordering from Myatt. Nice little piece of gear-well made and sturdier than my home rigged from an old metal stand. Well worth the $$ and a keeper. But what's with the guitar stand box?

Thomas: We all had the same question . . . but I guess it doesn't need to be answered. You are right - it is a nice piece of work. DAVE

I've got a Leblanc curved soprano stand that's at least 25 years old. It's adjustable and is still kicking; even after I had to unbend and redrill it after some idiot set down a huge speaker on top of it some years ago..... luckily the horn was in the case. Yet another reason I don't play much rock anymore.
