View Full Version : My Berg Larson destroys reeds!

I just changed my setup, albeit drastically, to a Berg Larson 130/3. I love the resonance of the mouthpiece, but I go through a box of reeds in record time...literally a reed can die in 20 minutes.

This is getting expensive, and really annoying on gigs to suddenly have my tone die without my expecting it. I've thought about going to synthetic reeds, but are there any suggestions out there so that I can keep this mouthpiece?

I'd have thought it must be something you're doing.
If you're used to a closer tip opening then perhaps you're biting too hard on the Berg to force the reed closer. This might prematurely weaken the reed's structure.
I currently play on a metal Quantum with a similar tip opening and previously (for about 10 years) on a Berg120/0 and can get reeds to last a number of gigs.

The problem seems to be that it's not sealing, so what could I do in terms of refacing or whatever?

I'm sure I'm not biting, as once in awhile I'll get a fluke reed that works great.
