What tip opening? It should be OK with that reed at around an opening of 5 to 7 or maybe more but it really is up to personal preference. It is a very bright sounding mouthpiece. Also, do try more than one reed as they vary a lot from one to the next in a box. You would probably find Rico Grand Concert will give you a softer sound, they are my favourite classical reed and are a bit easier to blow than the Vandoren Trad.

Java 2.5 is slightly softer but brighter too. Why not try a Vandoren trad 2?

I played on a bellite for a few months. It got me the sound I was looking for, but when I compared it to my Meyer and my Tonalin, I found that the differences were minimal and that the Bellite was making me work much too hard. I tried an assortment of reeds(Java 2,2.5,3; v162.5, 3; traditional 2.5, 3, 3.5; fibracell m&mh), but aside from altissimo, it didn't get much easier. It also wasn't as flexible for me stylistically. Just my two cents.

I use Beechler Bellite Metal on my alto. Try this:

1) If you want more bright sound
Vandoren Java + Olegature lig

2) If you want less bright:
Vandoren ZZ reed + Olegature lig

3) If you want more dark:
Vandoren Traditional Blue Box + Rovner

I play on Jazz Select MH. I use both the Meyer and the Tonalin now. I'm trying to decide on my favorite.

I use a Fibracell reed. I know lots of Beechler players that play on fibracells. It's hard to get used to, but once you get it, you have more control and versitility.
