I just broke down and got myself a Jag 11 for bari sax. I normally play a metal Quantum 11 that I reworked.

The Jag design takes away some of the bratty bassoon-like tone away from the low end of the bari as compred to the Q. It has more of a "bummm" sound on the low end. Warmer, but less cut. Blends well with other saxes and brass. Not as loud as my Quantum. But maybe I just need to trick it out.

I really like the basic sound and design. It ships with a Rovner Dark Lig.

Yes I have a #14 here, a nice mpc with a big full bodied tone, great for ensemble playing. Bri, it is nothing like the Lamberson but bigger bodied and witha fuller tone than a Quantum. worth chasing one down.

Does the Jaguar come with spoiler insert? I'm curious about this piece and wondering if it lends itself to "hotrodding" like a Link or RIA. In other words can it be made to cut?

Mine did not come with a Spoiler. I'll try one, or a removable baffle, in it. I would think it would work. But if you want more cut all the time, I'd start with a Smoothbore, XL or Quantum. The Jag looks like a Smoothbore with an angled gouge taken out of the center of the baffle.

I worked on mine a little. The table had some deep machining ridges in it so I flatted most of them out. The tip had a rollover baffle blending into a wide tip rail. I relieved this area with a file and defined a better tip rail. The 11 tip started as a .108" and became a .110" after I thinned the tip rail some. I measure this to the inside of the tip rail, so as you thin it, the tip opening measurement gets larger.

The facing curve was excellent. I have found this with nearly all metal Runyon pieces. I did some minor tweeking, but it really did not need it. I also want to widen the window some, but I'll play on it as-is for a while. I played a couple of big band gigs on it over the weekend and I'm still liking it.

Mojo - that "bummm" sound is kind of how I'd describe the bottom on the JJ #10 I had - does that sound right to you, i.e. similar to a Custom?

Is the Jag a fairly large-chambered piece? I'm looking for something large enough to intonate reasonably on my The Martin.

I would actually consider the Jag a small chamber since it is like a "Smoothbore" design. The chamber diameter is smaller than the cork diameter. Its more like the inside diameter of the neck end.

The Quantum has a medium chamber (equal to the cork diameter). The Jag has a gouge taken out of the center of the baffle which helps to compensate for its smaller chamber.

The Smoothbore and X.L. designs have the small chamber and a baffle without the gouge. I do not think Santy compensated for the smaller volume anywhere else in the piece. So I would expect this design to tune farther out on the neck cork.

I would expect the Custom to have a low end sound closer to the Jag than the Quantum or SBore/XL. The Custom may be even mellower.
