View Full Version : sax music in adult movie ?????

I'm not crazy about adult movie but I have a cable TV with a couple of movie channels like HBO, SHOWTIME, CMAX.....I found that the back ground music, when they do(??), is mostly sax solo(soprano). I don't know it's known-music or newly written music but they're pretty good. Anybody ever played in this kind of movies? Or is it just a recording?

adult movies usually (to my knowledge) have an electric guitar rift/saxophone improv on repeating chord sequence. as for why, havent the slightest idea. there are probably predone generic recordings of sax fillers.

I remember one occasion when, riffling thru the store index at a video store, I saw a heading for "Adult Films". AHA, says I. This must be where they keep the more sophisticated stuff. Film adaptations of Shakespeare. Historical documentaries. Complex political dramas. Things adults like and kids don't like.
Whoops!
That being said, recent Adult Films with sax include:
> A Woody Allen film with Coleman Hawkins' "Out of Nowhere". Sorry, I can never remember which Woody Allen film is which so don't ask the title.
> Another Woody Allen film with Ben Webster/Art Tatum "My One and Only Love"
> Round Midnight, which I thought was pretty lame, but it had Dexter Gordon in it.
> Bird, with of course...
> Bridges of Madison County, a melodrama of which I forgot all except the scene in the middle with a hot R&B sax solo

The adult movie gig might be nice if you could be there to play in person. I'd probably need a harder reed.

You absolutely crack me up. But in all honesty, I myself play some interesting stuff while watching two people groovin' at it on Skinemax.
For certain, baritone sax is not advised in these scenarios, unless their combined weight exceeds 500 pounds.

A saxophone player was contracted to do a recording session for a movie. Much to his delight, the soundtrack was pretty much a sax solo from beginning to end.
When the session was over the sax player asked the producer what film his music would be in. The producer admitted that it was an adult film and gave him the name of a theatre that would be showing the premiere.
At the premiere, the Saxophone soloist crept into the movie house, embarrassed, and sat in the back next to an elderly couple who were also trying to be anonymous. The movie was disgusting, ending with a scene involving a dog. The sax player finally had enough, and made his exit past the elderly couple, remarking "I only came to hear the music."
The old lady replied "We only came to see our dog!"

If you do enough sessions you will get here too.
I did work for a new age guy for a while in studio. He never told me, but I assumed we were tracking CDs he was working on. After sometime had passed I asked him when the stuff we did was coming out and he told me it was out and where I could find it. I was a little shocked to find out it had all been adult films. He knew me well enough to keep the visual monitor to himself, but later told me he was using one to keep the flow working with the action.
SO, I guess they do track the music for the films in LA.
I have heard some friends in lawsuits over music used for porn without permission too. SO, I guess they steal it too.
I have recorded a lot of SOURCE music that I have been told is used for it too.
SO,
you are all right.

I have some theories why the sax is the ultimate prono instrument.
-I think there is a reason why the word "sax" ist similar to the word "sex"
-Saxophinist have advanced tongue, lips and finger technics
-furthermore the sax is the instrument where you put the most MPC in the mouth
(Oh, I've seen some female saxplayers ... let's say the music got secondary)

There are also other musical performance opportunities for these types of movies.
I once saw a Toots Thielemans concert where he introduced a song by explaining he was first asked to record it for a movie soundtrack, as background for a movie where the script called for a scene where the male lead character <ahem> "could not get it done". Toots then preceded to play a ballad on his harmonica, which seemed to fit his description.

In Otto Preminger "The human factor" there is a wonderful belly dancer (Chantal Gray) whose dance is accompanied by a fabulous jazz quartet with an absolutely explosive saxophone player.
The music is credited to Gary and Richard Logan.
Seriously, I'd like if anybody have this movie if you could tell me something about this piece. I tried to trascript it once but I couldn't really capture the approach used, the scale or mode adopted or the chords. It would be a great sax solo.

I hate how people relate saxophone to pornography because of the music...
Saxophone playing is an art...perhaps a talent, and no art/talent should be degraded in such a way...

The reason the saxophone is used in a lot of porn movies is because
the sax sound is very sexy and romantic...;)
Although there is not much romance in those films, they try to give
the impression that there is.

My theory: They use traditional instruments generally, but saxophone is the best in movies (burlesque).
The result is awsome in either cases.

Not really porno, but still extremely adult I'd say.
Did you totally improvise or did you use a particular scale or mode, or there were any model or jazz standard your work was inspired to?
Had you been informed about the kind of movie, or they put you playing the music before the screen while the action was going?
I'm sorry if anybody finds this weird but my question is honest and musically concerned.
And I'm not amused about people being so cheap here.

On this session the director (Paul Verhoeven) and composer (Dave Stewart) were in the studio. We had a chat about what the scene was about. I then watched the scene and played to it.
The first eight bars of the solo were written, (although it wasn't actually written down - Dave just sang me the part to play). After that it's improvised but with an instruction to end on a high note. It's quite a simple structure so it was mostly done without thinking too much of what the chords were or scales were apart from playing in the right key and hopefully a bit in tune. It was more a question of finding something melodic that built some tension up to the high note climax.
I knew the movie's basic theme, but was not aware exactly how adult some of the scenes turned out to be. This scene in that clip is really quite tame compared to the vast amount of nudity and quite explicit sex

Thank you very much for your answer.
After that it's improvised but with an instruction to end on a high note.
This is similar to one thing I found transcripting the sax solo of the belly dance of the Preminger's movie in my previuos message #20.
After one or two intro bars with drums, bass, rhythmic electric guitar, the whole solo appears to be centered around a four bars pattern ending with a Bb note (G key on alto and bari) in sync with the danceuse making a movement with her blonde hair.
This obviously responds to a precise intention in the music accompaniment.
It's quite a simple structure so it was mostly done without thinking too much of what the chords were or scales were apart from playing in the right key and hopefully a bit in tune. It was more a question of finding something melodic that built some tension up to the high note climax.
I think I would be clueless with your solo if I didn't know Careless Whisper.
In more structured tunes I don't need to belong to a particular cultural context since the piece has a reference structure in itself.
But in old soundtrack musics I'm often left clueless, wondering what is still missing: I am there or not.
So stories like yours are precious.
Dave just sang me the part to play.
Or is this the key of the mistery?
Thank you a lot.
