Hiya all,
I'm heading to Toronto tomorrow morning, and I'm wondering if anybody has suggestions as to the best music stores and pawn shops to check out for a used alto sax. Thanks for your help!

Try Long & McQuade on Bloor St. near Ossington or Ken Fornetran who has a shop about a block east from Long & McQuade, and of course check out Gary Armstrong Woodwinds on Queen St. West where Merlin Williams works.

Long and maquade dosn't have any used horns just brand new yamahas. You never know what Merlin might have though.

the bloor street has all the major brands... not just yamahas
If you don't find anythin in TO let us know what you're looking for - some fellow Canadian may have the horn you're looking for.

Long & McQuade does sell vintage horns, but most don't last that long.
Ken Fornetran usually has three or four vintage horns for sale (some on consignment), is an outstanding tech, and might be able to give you some leads. Did you see this interview with him?

What are you talking about. My Bloor store has tonnes of horns of all major brands, both new and Used. We got probably 50 Mark Vi's in the shop just slowly waiting to be overhauled and sold.

It's my understanding that Ken Fornetran's shop operates on something like "flex time" (no set business hours) and that it can be hard to find him there -- I've tried calling ahead and always get a message machine. I need some Alexander reeds and I think he's the only one in Canada who sells them (?) Has this been other people's experience?

Hi JordanW:
I'll check and see if Ken is in town, and whether he has any reeds in stock. If I hear back from him, I'll send you a PM.

Ken is getting out of the reed business. He has some Alexanders on eBay right now: http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZhectomonkey
I believe Ken is often in his shop working on horns when the phone rings and is reluctant to leave his work to pick up and listens to his messages as they come in.

Does this mean the Musicstop in Halifax might soon have something other than a Kookabura alto and a Yamaha TS275 on the wall?

JordanW, I heard back from Ken Fornetran. He no longer stocks Alexander reeds but buys his from Roberto's.
