Hello from Belgium !
On 22nd march, I have seen the great Mr SHEPP in concert with his quartet, here in Belgium (Namur festival of Jazz).
The concert was extraordinary ! About three hours of concert playing !
There was saxophone playing and some vocals.
I was near the scene and I could see his horns...
You think he'd play an old SELMER Mark VI or a Super balanced action ?
NO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He was just playing a new SELMER reference 36 on te,or and a Soprano serie II ! His sound was deep, plain, sometimes raw...
In fact, he would play on everytinhg else the sound would be the same ! I have compare the sound on previous records(old Mark VI) andthis near the same !
The man makes the horn ! And for a 68 years old man, he was prodiguous !
I have talking to him and he says that to be good there's a lot of improvement on embouchure : the more important is to play with our ears not with eyes !
One of the best concert I ever seen !!!!

Jef Neve, and not only with jazz. He gives the Goldberg-variations of the real king of music, JS Bach as well. I'll see you there ;)

Holy moly ! Johnny Griffin playing MONK???? And I can't be there...
:banghead:
I saw Archie Shepp in 1969 at the Greek Theater in Berkeley. On the same bill: Max Roach, Gary Bartz, Albert King (blues & jazz were not really separated in those days!), and Sonny Rollins (playing solo!!). Man, that was a concert. I was just an 18 year old kid at the time and needless to say it was impressive to me. Glad Archie is still out there doing it.

That doesn't surprise me at all .
I have found that different horns, undoubtedly will respond for you in different
ways, but you should be able to get your basic sound on most quality horns.
You may prefer a particular make, or model within that brand, and without
question hear/feel/be impeded,at times by the differences, but it can be worked
around once you get used to it.
Joe Henderson was playing a Selmer SA80 in the mid 80s when his VI was
destroyed in a fire. He's on record as saying he did NOT like that tenor,
and even called Selmer personally to make suggestions as to how they could
improve the 'new ones' . I was watching Joe on that Blue Note tribute
concert, circa 1985; using this horn. No appreciable difference .
I mean I could hear some stuff that was not as biting as earlier Joe, but that
could have also been the reed, and many other things,
Charles Lloyd was also on that program--and is a loooongtime player of the
venerable Conn 'Chu Berry' tenor. For whatever reason he was using a Selmer
also stage. He sounded exactly like Charles, anyway ! .
I don't think you 'NEED' an *old* horn to get a so-called *vintage* sound.
The proverbial indian-arrow paradigm .:D

...Glad Archie is still out there doing it.
Am I the only one who thinks Archie hasn't really been "doing it" in any manner worthy of the name since sometime in the 70s? His playing (and composing) on his Impulse stuff from the 60s is really, really terrific. I obviously haven't heard everything he's done since, but what I have heard has been totally unremarkable in my humble opinion.

I agrre totally what you have said !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The sound comes from 90 % from Human :
I have the pleasure to play with Mr Sylvain LUC(belgian sax players):
I try my sax : selmer S80 II => it was the same sound as his Selmer alto Mark VI (he hasn't change mouthpiece, reed,etc...from my sax...)
So to all sax players who ask themselves => don't waste your time to think what will be the best horn to get, the best mouthpiece, etc...
Just play and open your ears...

Yes .. I obsessed quite a bit over vintage saxophones, and tried quite a
few in the process . I can totally appreciate and understand the obsession.
I'm not of the diehard, vintage only, mindset, though -- I'm glad for the
experiences, because it answered some questions/curiousities I'd been
having up until that time re: the old ' classic ' stuff, and just how essential
it is.
Anyway, the sooner you find something that works for you, the less time
you can spend wondering about equipment; especially when you *can't*
spend $8,000(USD) on a VI tenor, anyway .
As you said - " Just play and open your ears " .. yes .:)
