I've recently switched to trumpet (3 days ago) so that I could get a jump start on learning the brass family; but I've encountered a problem...
I'm able to read music fine, I can play just about anything you put in front of me at this point.. as long as it doesnt go above a G on the space above the staff  I just can't hit higher partials, and I don't know why! I've read tons of material, practiced hours in the past couple of days, but I just can't go any higher. I'm self taught so I don't have a teacher to tell me the correct way, so I was wondering if anyone here played the trumpet as well and could help me out!
Thanks!

The fact that you can play a top G within the first 3 days of playing Trumpet in itself is a bit of a miracle.

Ok now for the info - going above top G is always a challange, you must increase you air speed by strenthening your diaphramtic support, your throat like playing sax needs to be open, and you need to adjust your tounging slightly try thinking the syllable Tee (instead of tah) for this range.
Also a slightly more open embouchure started from the lower range will help.

With the notes Top A, Bb, B you need to be capable of Top C as these notes are produced by the same harmonic, except they are lowered by 1 tone when u have the first valve pressed, a semi-tone for middle valve and two tones for the third valve. You may also find there is a *Very* flat Bb open hiding up there as well.

Make sure u are not using too much pressure to play as well. Ramming the mouthpiece against your lips only cuts off the blood supply to them, effectively paralysing them, and causing them to swell which will stop you playing altogether, it also produces a weak tone, limits your endurance, and stops you playing high.

This only scratches the surface and is very generalised. I can go into more specific detail if you wish, let me know and I can post further tips for you
