I want to pick up the sax again, it has been more than six years since I do it. I have a jupiter alto sax. I need to get a new mouthpiece for this sax, but I do not know anything about brands. Could you tell me some brands that would be good to start again with, the reeds that I've used are mostly La Voz in med, and vandoren in 2 1/2 (a reed recommendation would also be good for me). thanks for all your help!:)

thanks fballatore, do you think that ebay is a good place to get the mouthpiece or is there a lot of risk of rip off there? I guess the question would also be is it ok to get a used one?
Thanks

I personally don't like buying mouthpieces from people I don't know. I have bought some used mouthpieces from people on SOTW, but not eBay. The Meyer is not that expensive new. You can get it from www.musiciansfriend.com.

I got they Meyer Richie Cole 5mm from http://www.1stopclarinet.com

When I bought it I paid $89 + postage to the UK. Came in at about $116 in total or about £70 UK. They cost around £146 in the UK.

It's a bargain in the US and very versatile. In short, well worth considering.

New to tenor saxophone after trumpet for 50 years. Is it usual for mouthpieces to be sent SOR. How do you KNOW what suits you unless you try it? I just got a Fremont and added a Selmer 3c or 3* whatever it is to get me started. Ben Webster has the sound how do I get it? Yeah, I know, practice. But what ELSE? No real bread available. But I cna experiment with reeds and technique.

Wow!! 50 years that's a long time to wait to start playing saxophone! What made you decide to go for it?

Congrats on taking that step!!!!!

I teach an older gentleman how to play guitar.(I'm a guitar teacher)
He never played before.(58)
he's a joy to teach because he really enjoys it for himself.
Hes not doing it to impress anyone.
he just loves music!
And you know what?...He's getting good too!
He's even doing some singing.
Even though he plays better now than he did when he first started, He enjoys it just as much now as he did when he first started. Its about discovering something new each day, week, each month etc.
He was just doing it for teh experience, out of joy and for a self challenge!
Thats the secret of tone...I think.
Starting from a positive mindset!

Glad your going for it!

How goes the playing?
I'm new to it too...at 37 years proud.
There is always something new!
Life is about infinite variations my friend!

I would suggest getting a morgan jazz mouthpiece. A 5M or 6m should be fine. This is hands down one of the best mouthpiece for the price at around $150 bucks. It is hand finished by a legend. You will only need a 2.5 to 3 strength reed to make this mouthpiece sing!

Meyer 5M mouthpiece. I prefer Vandoren reeds to the LaVoz.
I second this opinion. I bought a Meyer 5m (blem) brand new for $55, have blind tested reeds and settled on the Vandoren Jazz reeds as best for me. I love the mouthpiece, and can tell you for certain that it makes a huge difference, even in a not-so-good player like myself.

Hello, i'm new the board.

I picked up my alto after not having played it for about 6 years, and i was thinking about upgrading the mouthpiece. I've been reading through this board for a couple of weeks now, and had a couple of questions.

is the Meyer 5m that is recommended in this and other threads a hard rubber piece or a metal piece? Reason i'm askin, is because i went to a music store to inquire about the Meyer 5m, but they didn't carry it in stock. They told me it was a metal piece, but when i googled 'Meyer 5m' i got several hits that say it's a hard rubber piece.

I tried a pile of mouthpieces on alto and the one "out this makes my life easy mouthpiece" is the Vandoren AL3.
With the optimum lig fitted, it's unbeatably easy to play.
When I outgrew it, it went to a young student and they improved massively in 2 weeks practising on it and then stood out from the band at the next rehearsal.

When I tried to learn the trumpet long ago I was given a 7C mouthpiece and the rim cut into my lip - I did not want to struggle for years against the wrong setup learning sax.

I'll offer the lowest priced suggestion here. Get a David Hite Premier, they are all over ebay for $25 or so. I've had students show up with them and tried one out. I am very impressed. I wouldn't hesistate to use one on a gig.

Rubber.

I'll second the Hite suggestion. Or a Morgan Pro Tone for close to the same money.

He played an Otto Link New York metal 9 with Rico 3 1/2. That would be some serious bucks and very difficult to play without some serious chops. Do some research here and elsewhere about mpcs with similar chamber/baffle/tips and then scale back from there according to your budget and ability. There are a few good clips of Webster on You Tube with closeups so you can see what he is doing with his mouth.
