View Full Version : Narrow SR pro-what to do?

I just picked up tenor again and find that my SR tech pro 108 has a facing that is narrower than all tenor reeds by a considerable amount. This didn't bother me so much before but I've changed embouchure a bit and now it cuts into my lip uncomfortably. Also I notice that one of the rails is very slightly thinner than the other. I like the sounds I get from the SR generally and it's quite flexible with different reeds, though I often wish it had a little more warmth and body to it. I'm wondering if I should: a) have the SR refaced/tweaked or b) just put the money into another piece, perhaps a V-16 or something else a little more Link-ish, or c) try to make do with SR by buying bass clarinet reeds or something.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Politely ask the same question of SR:

I figured the statute of limitations or whatever might be up because I bought the SR several months ago... you think maybe they'd replace it? I guess it's worth asking.

I would not expect it, but from what I hear, they generally make a good product. They may want to hear the feedback and may stand behind it.

Their pieces look pretty streamlined. If the body has straight side that are only as wide as the reed, rafacing them will not make the rails any wider apart. Your only recourse would be to use narrower reeds.

Uniform width of each rail is more a cosmetic thing.

Yeah... the sides aren't quite straight but it does look like you'd need to take off quite a bit of metal to get down to where it's wide enough, more than would be really feasible... seems bizzare tho' that they would design a mouthpiece for tenor sax that can't really use tenor reeds. Any other SR users out there that can chime in?

You'd think being able to use standard Tenor sax reeds would be high on the design criteria list.

If you want
something else a little more Link-ish
why not just get a Link?

i play an SR fusion, the table is a little narrow but tenor reeds work just fine for me. i do lightly sand them so that i don't get any splinters or sharp bits poking me but beyond that they're fine.

I may just do that. Get a link, that is. If I find I can play one brightly enough. And if I can afford a to get good one or a custom one.

The reeds I sand down don't always work and sometimes are worse for splinters... besides it's a lot of trouble to sand off so much wood (about the thickness of a CD if you add up both sides!)

I've got a nice Theo Wanne refaced 6* Link STM for sale if you're interested-I'm in the Boston area too. Give a shout at tommyhorn2001@yahoo.com if you're interested

i usually only sand enough so that the sides are smooth, they're still a bit wide but they don't hurt none. though i'd be surprised if anything could hurt my lower lip any more...
