What aftermarket necks are you folks playing on JK SX90R tenors? Silver? Copper? Manufacturer? Opinions please.

Sorry to intrude on your thread, but i was just wondering if you or anyone else has a 6.6 stamped on your Keilwerth neck?

Morry, this has been a long time coming but I think, from personal experience, that getting your hands on an alternative Keilwerth neck is a troublesome business. Anyway, I found a couple to try, Keilwerth Diamond I think, one was silver plated and the other beaten brass with gold laq. I eventually took the brass because it sounded richer in the try out room. When I got it home there was both more and less to it. It is richer but also cleaner than the standard neck, volume wise I'd say it was the same but I haven't been able to try it outside the practice room. This is where I have some doubts, that in a real playing situation it might wimp out and either not have the volume or thin out on me. The place it excels, however, is in it's flexibility, quick response and ease of blowing. I'd always thought the standard was pretty free but I find with the Diamond that slight problem areas seem to have disappeared. Tonally, at least so far, I can take either neck but in terms of the ease and flexibility of the new neck there's no competition. I'm also finding it more expressive.

As replacement necks go this one is pretty basic, the sold silver wasn't available, but I'm still tempted to give the silver plate another try. The Boesken and Glogers are going to be different beasties and I might think it's worth the effort to chase them now that I've experienced the difference.

Anyone have any other aftermarket neck experiences with Keilwerths in the last 6 months?

I'm using a solid silver Gloger neck on my Couf SuperbaI. Tried several Keilwerth necks in the past including a copper and standard gold over nickle plate. The Gloger is by far the best with better overall response and increased tone complexity.

Was it a standard curve that Gloger had on hand, or did he have to do a custom for you?

Morry,
I am using one of Stephan Boesken's nickle silver necks on my straight SX90R...turns it into a rougher growling beast, wich is really nice for the R&B/blues gigs.

I highly recommend yougive his necks a try.

I have no qualms with the standard neck, though, but for a little variety...

Only problem is with all the custom necks, you can't really give them a try. I do hope to be in Germany, probably at the JK factory next summer, but I won't have my horn with me. That's the only way I know to try various necks.

Morry, why not contact Stephan and ask him to arrange to have a couple of horns like yours at his shop. Take along your standard neck, mouthpiece, reeds, etc. and give them a blow with your neck and a few of his. Not a perfect solution, since JKs vary so much, but you'll be able to get a pretty good idea.

Good idea. I think I'll try that if we get to go.

I sent my original Couf neck to Gloger for him to use as a reference. I also tried one of his copper necks with a Guardala curve. Tuning was still good but with a different, softer, sound.

Morry,

I believe you contacted me some time ago regarding the Gloger-Handcraft replacement for your Keilworth.

Here at Gloger-handkraft we offer a custom made neck totally to your specifications (correct diameter and length sized tenon, thick or thiin-walled, solid copper or silver, under-slung or regular octave). Handmade by the master neckmaker himself, Karsten Gloger. And then you have ten days to try the neck on your own instrument in as many different playing enviroments as you can think of. And THEN, if the neck does not meet your needs, YOU can return the neck, get a FULL refund EXCEPT for $55.00 for s & h fee.

Now if that's not the BEST deal going tell me what is!

Now, aren't you ALL ready to order Gloger Necks?

Mad,

Thanks for the info. What would you say the sonic differences are between a thin and thick wall neck?

Morry,

I would say the difference between thin and thick walled is on thick the fundamentals of the sound are more promiment and thin walled the overtones in the higher range are more prominent.

I generally suggest players that like the more traditional sound ie Dexter, Trane, Getz, Prez, Canonball, Johnny Hodges etc thick walled. And thin walled for those contemporary player like Brecker, Berg, Sandborn, Koz, Bony James, Richard Elliot etc.

My thin-wall silver neck is working great on my Couf. Every once in a while I put the stock neck back on only to realize just how stuffy it sounds!

Man, now I gotta try one of these Gloger's on my Couf. The stock neck is pretty stuffy, and I've been using a Selmer VII neck, which is better, but...

Tom, can you email me? I've got some questions about the neck.

Which neck (silver or gold finish) gives a warmer rounder tone for sx90r tenor? Keilwerth, ponzol, kloger......

For that kind of tone colour, may I suggest a Stephan Boesken heavy wall brass neck in gold plate.

I had an SX90 for a little while & tried the Kielwerth diamond necks. They were good. The copper diamond was definately warmer & fatter, worth trying if that's what you're looking for. Less projection in the upper end but that's my weak spot anyway. It was a good neck.

I got it from Saxfoonwinkel in Holland. Not too expensive. They have a trial period. I had to wait a while before they could get it though.

The standard diamond necks was the opposite - more upper end, very projecting and clear, not thin though.

I currently use a copper neck on a silverplated SX90R tenor.Compared to the stock neck, copper has more open, warmer sound that is bigger.Copper neck has the same effect on my black-laquered JK.I used a diamond neck on a blacklaq. JK some years ago, powerful sound but not very warm.JK silver neck has warm, resonant sound silver provides.

Okay, bronze keilwerth neck gives a little bit warmer tone. But for me a bronze neck on my ns sax it's to ugly. I am pretty happy with the standart ns neck. Qicker response than the bronze neck.

I'm playing at the moment a JK Toneking and I'm looking for a new neck.
It has a silver finish and so I would prefer a silver neck just because it looks better.

anyone has an idea how to get a good neck for it that I'm able to test to know how big the difference is compared to the Toneking neck?
