A vintage sax I bought came with a Selmer facing R alto mouthpiece. It has a silver ligature and a silver ring at the neck socket. Does anyone know anything about this mouthpiece, or the series that it came from? I think it's from the late 30's. Seems like a classical mouthpiece. Produces a wicked nice low register sound.

Mark, Selmer used letters to signify how wide the tip opening was.

To the best of my knowledge they never had anything as wide as an "R"

The silver ring suggests that you are correct in that it is an early Selmer mouthpiece. It is possibly a model called AIR FLOW. Is it possible that the R is a B ? Is the word " table" visible. A table B in this model would be standard.

Yes you are correct. This would be thought of as a classical mouthpiece.

It has a large straight through chamber and close tip opening.

Have a look at WWW.Mouthpieceheaven
Look under Resources. They have pictures of the various Selmer mouthpieces and hopefully this will help .

KMR -

I've been away for a few days so couldn't respond until now. The Selmer mouthpiece does say 'TABLE R'. Under magnification it's clearly an R and not a B. I'll check out the website you suggested to see if I can find out anything more.

Thanks,
Mark
