Cannonball has a very exuberant, happy tune on the alto. He tends to use his bag of licks frequently in his solos.
Henderson is a very rhythmically advanced player. Totally in his own school.
There are simply too many differences between them because they are completely different players. Just listen to their recordings to find their differences.

Definitely. Goodspeed, did you want recommendations for albums or something?

Jackie M and Cannonball both out of Bird. Cannonball is like the Oscar Peterson of alto.. endless ideas, sheer virtuosity , never breaks a sweat.
Jackie M more complex and to my ears soulful, hard to emulate with very personal tone ,vocabulary and intonation. My favourite jazz altoist. Check also John Handy, Charles Macpherson, Charlie Mariano... Easy to hear Jackie's assimilation of Ornette and Trane into his own music.

all the Saxophonists that I mention worked with my idol Lee Morgan, except for Cannonball. I was just wondering everyones personal take on them.
Jackie Mclean is funky and intense. Its like he is always talking. To me he like the James Brown of Alto Sax. Actually if anyone is like the James Brown of Sax it would be Maceo Parker and James Carter.
Joe Henderson to me seems acrobatic with his solos and its like he spirals his notes. If Joe was a singer he would be like Stevie Wonder. Controlled but can soar
Wayne Shorter to me seems to have a sense of mystery in his solos and tone. His signiture song to me Footprints. The only way to describe him would be mystical blues. He's like a shaman.
Cannonball to me is bluesy and funky. Laid back and happy. To me its like he is braking bread. His licks are recognizeble as Keith Richards from the Rolling Stones and he has a feel good attitude to his music. If Cannonball sang he would be somewhere between Aretha Franklin and The Beatles.
Hank Mobley to me is very laid back and introspective and soulfull. The only way I could describe him would be like he plays his sax like a soul singer sings.
If Marvin Gaye played Sax he would be like Hank Mobley.
If I was making a cd I would use Jackie McLean for somethings fast driving, funky and intense. The lion and the wolf by Lee Morgan suites him perfectly.
I would use Joe Henderson for something laid back and driving, but not as intense. To give him more acrobatical room to do his thing.
Hank Mobley would be something laid back and smoking. Like some sort of gospel song.
Wayne Shorter would be doing something mystical and mysterious sounding. I would have him do The Doors classic, Riders of the Storm.
Cannonball would be playing a blues number in a blues song.
