I'm looking for Arnett Cobb album recommendations that are bop orientated. I like his sparse approach to bebop.

Check out 'Blow, Arnett, Blow' with Eddie Lockjaw Davis, 'Blue & Sentimental', 'Live at Sandy's', 'Party Time', 'More Party Time' and 'Movin' Right Along'.
Proper records out of the UK just put out a great budget priced disc of like 25+ Arnett Cobb early cuts when he fronted his band, Cobb's Mob. Great stuff, and at the price, it's about the best there is.

If there was ever a rippin roarin tenor player it was Cobb. I got to see him a few times. Once with Buddy Tate and Scott Hamilton, he shredded them too. One of the greats.

I have some old vinyl of Arnett, got it when the college radio station I was volunteering at was changing format.. idiots!
Funky Butt is the one title I can remember. I just retrieved them recently from the family homestead when mom sold and moved.. gotta get that turntable out of storage too! ;)

Christmas tradition at my home: after the crackers have been pulled, on goes Helen Humes singing Ooh Baba Leba with Arnett Cobb backing her up. The good times roll, indeed they do.

Sorry, that's the opposite of bebop. Bop makes it hard to digest a huge Christmas dinner...

I just checked out a sample of the Proper disc here (http://www.cdconnection.com/bin/nph-search?part=980644&source=robot). He sounds like a disciple of Prez.
The Proper CD's are pretty good. I just got the Prez and Hawk ones. They also have a bunch of other tenor players of Cobb's generation like Dexter and Sonny Stitt. It's fascinating hearing these players from this period. They all seem to play in a simliar style, influenced by Prez.
