View Full Version : Non-slippiest Lig for Metal Quantum???

I have a new metal Quantum for tenor. All my other Quanta are delrin (plastic). I like the way the metal plays very much but the ligs I have that fit it (a regular-type brass Selmer soprano two-screw and a Rovner "light") both slip so that when I tighten the ligs after lining up the tips of the mouthpiece and the reed, the reed and ligs (either one) move farther toward the mouthpiece tip so that when I finish, the reed overlaps the mouthpiece tip too much (for my taste). The conventional Selmer lig slips even more than the Rovner. I don't have this problem with any kind of lig on my delrin Quanta.
Can anyone suggest a lig that won't slide on a metal Quantum as the lig is tightened? I prefer regular-style ligs to fabric ones.???
Oh yeah, I don't like the Runyon lig that comes with the Quantum. Does anyone?

Try a BG Metal Jazz - they have little rubber pads inside on the top that stop slippage. I have one for a Quantum soprano that works well, though I am not sure of the range of sizes, mine was meant for a metal Dukoff.
Another really good option is the Consoli lig, though I see you say you don't want a fabric one.

Another option, if you're a cheapskate like me, is to stick some thin rubber into the top of a plain metal lig.
I find I have to do this pretty often to the shiny plastic mouthpieces and metal ligs that come with student saxes. They're often tapered and as soon as you tighten the lig it slips off. Makes you wonder if anyone putting these kits together ever actually plays them.
I use a fabric one on my metal Quantum (BG possibly?). Works fine.

The WORST I've ever run across is the Dukoff P series. I finally resorted to fileing a groove on the top of the mouthpiece to keep that lig from sliding off into my mouth! The Runyons are models of perfection by comparison!

Good idea, Big Nick. A good ready made sticky rubber patch for the purpose is of course a mouthpiece patch. For a cheapskate solution, use a bicycle tube repair patch.

you could also use a thin clear mpc patch on top of the mpc, Runyon's are nice and thin, and would be keeping it in "the family," so to speak ;-)

Thank you for all your useful suggestions. Bill Mecca you definitely have the most straightforward notion! Thanks again.

Go to the music store and get a few of the flat headed screws that come with the cheap mouthpieces. They will work better than any fancy ones you'll find because you can tighter the dog out of them with very little effort. Try that with the round headed ones that come with the Runyon Quantum, and YOU'LL HURT YOUR FINGERS. Runyon should quit shipping the metal mothpieces with the round headed screws. They are doing themselves and their customers a dis-service.
The flat headed keyshaped screws will tighten much tighter than the rotnd ones that come with the Runyon Quantum. It's been working fine for me for 2 years. You just can't tighten the ligature enough with the round headed screws. When changing reeds, which I do often, the round screws were even hurting my fingers. It slipped loose a couple of times when I first got the mouthpiece about 3 years ago. It hasn't slipped once with the flat head screws.
After a while some time back one screw broke. I do tighten the heck out of it, but it does work fine. Buy a dozen of them in case one breaks. But only one broke so far in the past 2 years.
I just tried twisting and pulling on the ligature very hard and it won't budge. The Quantum Metal is the easiest blowing mouthpiece in the world. If someone knows of one easier to blow and will subtone and blow the altissimos as easy on my Buescher 400, please tell me. I want to try it.

A Bonade Eb clarinet lig fits perfectly and holds securely once it's properly fitted to the Quantum.

The Rovner 2M fits the Quantum (and Smoothbore Metal, XL and plastic Quantum) tenor sax mouthpiece.
The Rovner 1M fits the Quantum (and Smoothbore Metal, XL, and plastic Quantum) alto sax mouthpiece.
I have had no slippage problems with these ligs.

Can't beat the Rovners for non-slipperiness and ease of use.
Ligaphone. It will also fit most any mouthpiece you may buy, trade or throw away.
