Are these the same mouthpiece? If not, is the JJ based on the Runyon? Then, does anyone know what the difference is? I haven't played bari in years, and want a piece with a smaller feel in the mouth. Also, the Runyon/JJ tip openings are based on a different scale than most that I've used. If I use a .080 on alto and .100 on tenor, would their #10 (.105) be about right?

I have a couple of Quanta for bari, one a Runyon in a larger size and one in a JJ "Q" in size 7; the latter is what I use mostly since I don't play bari all the time and my chops aren't necessarily in primo shape.

I think the JJ and Runyon sizes are the same, so this size 7 tip is about .090 inches, perhaps slightly more.

I also use a Quantum on tenor in the same number tip size, 7, and I think this is pretty close in size to the bari size 7.

On bari I use a Fibracell "soft" and on tenor I use a Fibracell " medium soft."

To answer your question directly, both the JJ "Q" and the Runyon Quantum are wonderful pieces, with a great, full sound, easy low notes and a punchy top end which should give your bari plenty of power. The JJs are more expensive than the Runyons, especially if you buy your Runyon from Charlie A or some other discount source. On the other hand, Jody E's service is extremely quick and responsive in every way. You can return the piece if you don't like it. Ordering from Charlie A is very satisfactory, but not quite so quick since Charlie (in my experience) has to order from the Runyon factory after you order from him. Plus some submissions to this forum suggest that the JJ facing is somewhat better than the standard Runyon and the quality control better. Either way, these "Qs" is cool.

I can't speak for the JJ because I have yet to try one. You might want to consider the Runyon Jaguar. I play on a Jaguar #10, and use a #2 Fibracell. The price from Charlie A on a Jaguar is very attractive. By comparison, I use either a Link 7* (.110 tip) or Morgan 7E (.90 tip) on my tenor and a Barone 8* (tip opening .95) on my alto. I don't have any problems switching. The Jaguar has a very small profile in the mouth (my alto ligature was too big for it) and is very versatile. If you want to hear what at least one bari sounds like with it I have a clip of Misty on my website that is just me and the Jaguar on my Mark VI.
