Heard this on the radio today. I actually have a different recording w/o a saxophone solo on CD. Anyone have an idea as to who the player was??

Thanks in advance.

If it was a later recording and sounded very similar to Cannonball, it might have been Mike Smith (http://members.tripod.com/~hardbop/msmith.html).

In the 50s – perhaps George Siravo on the orchestra dates (altho he was better known as a lead man), or Jerry Dodgion with the small group, led by Red Norvo on vibes. Otherwise – Frank always worked with the best of that special breed, the Session Men. Many were big band stars of years past.

Thanks, Chitown.

I checked out Mike Smith on amazon & listened to some clips. Sounds like it was him. Great sound, great bop phrasing too.

Turns out he actually recorded "I Get a Kick Out of You" on his Frank Sinatra songbook CD w/ a quartet - that might be the next album on my to-buy list!

I have been told Frank Sinatra also used the Count Basie orchestra a lot and enjoyed having marshal Royal on alto sax featured on his tunes.
