 In the old Marketplace forum, someone was offering for sale a Guardala tenor MB but wasn't sure whether it was a I or a II. I have both pieces, and they can be identified by the relative length of the baffle compared to the length of the window.
The widow on both pieces is nearly identical in the examples I have. However, the length of the baffle from the tip rail to the "break line" is noticeably shorter on the MB I.
If you look at the window on the bottom of the piece with the mouthpiece held vertically and the tip pointing "up", the length of the baffle in my MB I is 40-45% of the length of the window, from the tip rail to the "break line" where the baffle changes its slope into the chamber. In my MB II, this distance is longer, about 55-60% of the window length from the tip rail to the break line.
My gold MB I simply says "GMB" followed by the serial number - all hand written - with "DG" hand enscribed on the other side of the barrel. My gold MB II says, "Michael Brecker Type II" on the top of the piece - machine engraved - with "MBII" hand enscribed next to the serial number and"DG" hand enscribed on the other side of the barrel. Of course, both pieces have the familiar pink dental goop for the tooth patch, not the "holographic" patch with "DG" in it.
I don't know which is worth more, but personally I prefer the MB II with my Selmer and Buescher tenors. It's just bit brighter and sweeter.
