Does anyone have suggestions for a good sax tech in the KC area? I was given Heritage Music but they guy who owned it and repaired saxes has sold it to a brass player and moved out of town.

Although this brass player can also perform woodwind work, I prefer to have someone who really plays sax working on my horns.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

you would be better off driving about 5 hours or so to Cedar Falls IA, and taking your horn to Randy Jones (Tenor Madness).

Look up my old high school buddy, Harold Steinhardt, in Overland Park, KS. Harold and I played together in the band at Shawnee Mission South High, back in the mid-1970s. If you get in touch with him, tell him Mike Ruhl says hello.

Try Dooley Weilert, 913-722-1878. Dooley has worked on saxes since WW II. I believe he's pushing 90 now, but keeps a shop in his garage. He does most repairs while you wait. Many KC-area sax players swear by him. For dents Brian, the brass guy at Heritage, is excellent (and seems to be good on general sax stuff). When Dooley tests a sax he grabs his mouthpiece, slaps on a dry reed, and plays away, using lots of air support. Dooley's shop is a disorganized museum of sax tools, parts and pads.

Meyer Music sends all their repairs to some pretty reputable people. One guy they use has a trailer devoted to it, because he got kicked out of the house. The other one that does mine always does a great job.
