I've been good and practiced my scales and long tones everyday. All on the theory that when the student is ready - the sax will appear.
Today in a pawnshop - Buescher "Big B" alto 326xxx - a relaq, but in perfect playing condition! $280.00 plus tax.
I've had an early post-selmer buyout 400 (flowered engraving) that is a reallyl fine horn - this one edges it out in the upper register.
gotta go practice.

Don't want to rain on your parade... but I just got a vintage 1931 alto. ser#261xxx in near mint condition. It would be classed as a closet horn.
Beautiful original lacquer at 95%+... all for a cost of $291.00 WOW.
Add another $35 for 2 new pads and a tune up to bring it back to playing condition. And the sound! ...would make you weep.
I feel guilty, as if I took advantage of the seller. But I am sure I will get over it! LOL

I know hate is a strong word, but I hate you guys for the deals you're talking about! :D
A few weeks ago, I was in a pawn shop and bought an old Vito alto with a Selmer C* Soloist short shank mouthpiece. I really only wanted the mouthpiece but the pawn shop man said no way, all or nothing. So, I got the whole thing for $135. The Soloist fetched $150 and the Vito $185 on eBay.
No Buescher "Big Bs" as of yet. I'm not sure I'd part with it if I got it for that cheap!

I think I've got the best one.
About 15 years ago, when I was stil in high school, my dad comes home with a Big B alto that he found at an antique store buried under a stack of junk. The owner gave it to him for $35, and also threw in an Evette-Schaeffer tenor from the early '60 for an additional $20. :P They needed a total of $150 to get them both into decent playable shape.
Of course, I thook one look at both horns, decided they were totally scuzzy and nowhere near as shiny as the YAS-23 I had at the time, and promptly shoved them away in the attic and forgot about them. (After all, what would all of my band friends think? Appearing at rehearsal with some old beat up horn? Perish the thought!)
Until about 2 years ago, when I started playing again. I'm *SO* grateful that I didn't toss them out or sell them when I was young and insane.

I been seriously thinking of cruising pawn shops, flea markets and garage sales. I check eBay every day (Thats where I picked up my Buescher). There are literally thousands of closet horns out there, and most sellers don't have a clue as to the value. I am dreaming of a Selmer Mark VI for $50. Somewhere, in somebody's garage there sits a Mark VI waiting for me to find it.
