It would be interesting for us all the see the results on this topic, althought the opinions might vary a lot.
1) What alto hard rubber mpc (if you have to vote for one only) would you say has been the most popular in jazz history?
2) What is your favourite for your personal playing?

I would say it's either Brilhart or Meyer.

my vote for all time favourite amongst players, as well as an excellent performer - Meyer Bros.
My yerrrr.... :)
(By the way, did anyone try those new Legend piece from SR Tech? I know a guy who owns two Meyer Brothers and he said this piece was even better)

historically, I think a lot of the Jazz cats used/use the old Meyers.
My personal fav. is the Morgan Excalibur.

I would say the original Meyer #5 (New Yorker) made by the Meyer Bros. Since J. J. Babbit bought out the Meyer business, the newer Meyer #5 mpc. is still a popular buy. Although the Babbit mouthpieces of today are not of the same quality as the vintage "New Yorkers" . To address this problem, the Babbit Company has come out with the Meyer #5 Richie Cole mouthpiece and the Meyer (G) #5,6, and 7 mouthpieces in order to regain the same quality that the original Meyer Brother's mouthpieces had. This is not to say that Meyers were and are the best Jazz mpcs, but to say the by shear numbers of mouthpieces sold, Meyers must be number one.

Hard to argue with an original Meyer Brothers from back in the day. My old repair guy in Dallas still has one and that's the only one I've had the pleasure of playing, and my god... it's one of those pieces you'd give a nut for, seriously!! I saw one go for over $1200 last year on eBay. Can't blame 'em. If I had the funds, I would do it, no question.
But to digress... the best HR alto piece by a long f*cking shot I've played recently (still do with great pride and happiness, in any setting, be it jazz or funk) is a HR Jody Jazz mpc. (Jody Espina). I've never been so happy with a piece on alto. I don't intend to ever look for another alto piece.
Unless, of course, somebody wanted to sell me a vintage Meyer Bros. piece!!

Get Ralph Morgan to modify the facing of a current Meyer into a NY Meyer facing. It'll amaze you. Plays just like the real thing and a hell lot cheaper.

I own a Brilhart, and I love it! but I seriously would rather play a metal jazz mouthpiece over hard rubber, but they are both fun. :D

I would say that the Meyer #5 of old was the most popular jazz mpc. I think even the newer Meyers are just as popular, when you find one that plays well. I play all types of music, but for jazz I use a hard rubber Otto Link #7.

Would you know where I could get a tip wand for meyer bros. mouthpieces? or do all tip wands do all facing curves?

Hmm, I don't know if it's necessarily the "best" mouthpiece out there, but the Meyer 5M is probably the most popular jazz mouthpiece of all time. It's definately a classic, like Fender amps and Humbucker pickups (guitar-talk).

I would agree about the Meyer sound for jazz. I play on a Vandoren V16 A5M. They seem to be much more consistent than the new Meyer's. The second most popular mouthpiece for jazz on alto would probably be the Brilhart Ebolin (vintage ones not new) or the Selmer Soloists or later scroll shanks in C** or larger tips.

The Jody Jazz rubber/plastic mouthpieces are simply Runyon Customs, with the special facings finished to Jody's specifications. Basically, the facings are longer, with appropriate adjustments made to the baffles. The metal Jody Jazz mpc is also a Runyon, designed by Santy and Jody.
