In another thread, someone (Dave Dolson?) mentioned having the shank of a mouthpiece cut off in order to allow him to tune sharp on his vintage sop.

I'd like to do this - is it pretty much just a matter of doing it, or is there something more involved?

(I was thinking of using a Dremel cutting disc for it...)

I once had a metal Selmer soprano piece with a cut-off shank This allow the piece to be pushed in more.

Tim Price posted here some time ago about Dexter Gordon's metal Selmer sop piece and mentioned that it's shank had been cut off as well and that the refacer who did work for Gordon did this. I can't remember the refacer's name and I can't find the post now.

It won't harm the piece providing you be carefull not to cut it badly or skew. - Cut only the amount that's needed to get it in tune. Be carefull with the dremel!

That's my biggest concern with the dremel - it'd be nice if it was big enough to go all the way through on one pass.

Unfortunately, the thinnest saw I have seems way to coarse for the job...

Depends on how much you need off. I've used a hack saw and a bench grinder. If its a little, grind or file it off. You can belt or disk sand it. Its a "just do it" thing. Just try not to bugger up the rest of the piece.

Thanks for the help, guys - it went much better than I had hoped!
