I have a Holton soprano that came without a mpc. I found a Holton mpc that is metal but doesn't have any markings as to C or b-flat sop. I did try a selmer classic short shank and it played fairly well in tune.

Any other suggestions on suitable mpcs for a C-soprano?

thanks

Logically you need a vintage mpc. marked 'C', which are very rare and expensive! I found that a modern Bb sop. Runyon Custom, In tip openings 5, 6 &7 to be excellent in playability and sound. This model works just fine. I am not endorsing other new or modern Bb pieces.

Ed Pillinger, in Britain, is making a mpc he calls "C Melody Soprano"!

Others disagree, but I have found that there are so many Bb soprano MPs out there, in so many chamber sizes and lengths, it is easier to match one up to a C sop than it is to find a true C sop MP. My C sop actually plays more in tune with a larger chamber MP than I use on my vintage Bb sop.

You may also need to shorten a Bb MP by cutting the 1/4" off the shank. You can also put a little putty in the chamber to make the volume smaller.

I, too, have found a Runyon Custom to work well with the Buescher C sopranos. Excellent intonation and response up to high E... yes... high E.

Fingering for high E... octave key, LH1, 2, 3, and open the high Eb key.

I too have Buescher C soprano. I have the c mouthpiece that is so closed that its unplayable to me.
Is the Runyon Custom recommended here, a good piece for other sop's. I have another sop that I play(Bb), but have never been entirely happy with the mpc.

Is it normal to have to push the mpc on really far on sops. My mpc nearly swallows the cork to play in tune. seems to make it stuffy. It plays much better without it on so far, but is out of tune?

runyon custom is good mpc for c and Bb as well. most sops need the mpc pushed quite far onto the cork to come up to pitch-esp the older vintage ones. you can work around this by useing a mpc with a small chamber and /or a high baffell. get runyon with the spoiler and this will make its chamber even smaller and not have to be pushed onto cork so far. my c buescher tunes well even with out the spoiler. it works so well i have given up lokking for a real c mpc

A while back, I came up with a list of fingerings for high-Eb keyed sopranos up to A3. They are a bit awkward like all "altissimo" fingerings but are managable. I can post them when I find them. Still looking for that Buescher or Martin curvie to use those fingerings on!
