Hi gang. I was wondering if anyone can decipher the markings on Steve Broadus pieces. i've got an older Broadus piece (non-knurled shank--looks like a woodwind co. blank) that says "S4+" and then a slightly newer one with the knurled shank that says "S4*" The older one has been opened to around .105 by Ralph Morgan, and is the best piece I've ever played. The newer one is completely original, and is probably around .75 or so in tip opening. Also, the knurled shank "S4*" seems to have a bit less baffle than the older, "S4+" (or maybe that's because it hasn't been opened?) I'd like to have the other one opened to the same dimensions as the Morgan-refaced one, (to create a duplicate) but I don't know if it will sound the same or not. Anyway, can someone enlighten me on broadus specifics and the possibility of creating a duplicate piece?

Hello all,

I'm not completely 'clued in' to the Broadus' in general, but, I recently received a Broadus tenor S4* that I'd sent to Doc (almost on a whim), that had been previously 'whittled' on by someone else. Doc was able to do his 'magic' on it, and, it's incredible!

I'm looking for another as a result, if you want to sell your S4*, let me know, or, have Doc 'have a go' at it, he opened mine to .110, and, it's huge, warm, very open in feel, flexible. I'm stunned by this piece, and it keeps getting better.

good luck with it, DC

DC,

Not exactly what you are looking for but I have a Broadus SB5 that I'll sell if you are interested. It's in great shape. Send me an e-mail.

thanks DC--i bought this piece specifically because the first one blew me away. It's too close for me as is, so i'll have it refaced at some point.

"Call Doc" is certainly one answer but why not call Ralph Morgan and send him both 'pieces to ensure a duplicate match? The reason I suggest that is I have learned that various refacers have their own magic facing curves and may not exactly duplicate someone else's work.

Or, take a page from Jon Van Wie and send your "second" mouthpiece to Doc (or similar) in the hope that the new one will outperform your old fav'.
