View Full Version : Rico royals
I've bought rico royals on a couple of occasions and their fine for like one play and they sound great but always when I'm finished playing I see like a ocean wave warping effect on this reed I have never seen it on the java's ZZ's blue box or a few other unnamed brands. so whats up?
don
p.s I've dried them on glass and rubbed them on paper like I do all my reeds.

You wanna know what's up??:D
Buy nice reeds e.g. : all apart from Rico Royal
yeah I usuallty stay away from them but I don't like the vandoran blue box its either them ore rico's when it comes to classical reeds and I want a nice full sound for when I play in concert bands. The ZZ's do fine they sound good but kinda cut through a concert band. Ideas?
thanks
don
I wouldn't call the RR's classical cut reeds though.
A good Vandoren Blue Box is quite nice but I don't find too many in a box. I suggest trying Gonzales. They work for legit and jazz if the mpc is not to radical (such as Meyer types.) Gonzales are a tad on the hard side for the #.

I agree with MM. Gonzales reeds are high quality cane and remarkably consistent, and about 1/2 strength harder than most Alexander or Rico brands. Also, the Gonzales come in 1/4 strengths.
too bad i cannot get that brand of reed here ....
i'll look into it though..
thanks

My Vandoren Java's get like that sometimes, but as long as they are soaked for a minute or so, they get flat again and play fine.

Haven't seen this after playing, but when you first wet a reed if it
has already been played at least once. After a minute or two, it should
flatten out again.
Try using a reed guard to store the reeds between playing sessions.
I find this reduces the amount of wrinkles when you re-wet the reed.
I have seen this effect on just about every brand of reed I have used.

I get that with Rico Royals too. I'm starting to branch out into La Voz, which I'll get the good solid jazzy sound out of, compared to the royals. If I want a classical tone, I go with Van Dorens.
The reed will straighten out if you play through it for a while, or you could use your fingers to massage it flat...
