View Full Version : Indexing Real Books?

Apologies if this is not the right Forum for this query.... but....

Has anyone gone through the trouble of indexing Real Books volumes one
through three? I have thought about sitting down and keying in all the
titles, keys, and what book each tune is in, then sorting it alphabetically.
That way, on a gig, there's no need to frantically thumb thru all three
books to see where the tune is when one is called. Check the master list,
grab a book and go!

Probably would put it in an Excel spreadsheet...

OR.... has anybody already done this, and is willing to share?

Thanks,
Steve S

You can buy the realbooks on computer CD. I think it is in Acrobat format. I havn't seen it yet and don't know exactly how it is set up, but you might want to check that out before spending countless hours typing in all the song titles.

I've joked with friends about getting the CD's and just bringing a laptop out to gigs. It would be a lot lighter than carrying two or three realbooks!

Steve, it has been done. A guy named Mike Nelson actually made an index in MS word of all the new real books and the old ones. I converted the Word doc to an excel spreadsheet and into a Palm database. Try this: http://www.frii.com/~brain/com/music/realindex/ Hope it works.

Thanks very much, all! I figured that SOMEONE out there had taken the time and effort to compile this info.

Interesting note on the legal vs illegal Real Books!

I have an excel spreadsheet with Bootleg RB1,2,3 and Sher 1,2,3. There are several worksheets sorted by title, composer, book, etc, with page numbers for the concert books. I will try to remember to put it on a web page tonite and post the URL>

How come you don't have the .PDF linked to auto-play Band-in-the-Box files automatically, complete with all the *.MGU files? I would like that for $10!! LOL
