Just wondering if you use a softer reed with a open mouthpiece or a harder reed. What kind of mouthpiece would a yamaha 4c be?

A 4C has a medium-close tip opening. A beginner player can start with a mouthpiece like this and a soft reed like a 1.5 or 2. As your embouchure develops, you will find that the reed will close off on you when you try to play loud. This is when you can consider moving up in reed strength by 1/2 strength. You should not go so hard that you loose control of being able to play low notes softly (this also requires a leak free sax).
You can work yourself up to a 3.5 reed or so on a 4C. At this point you should explore some slightly more open mouthpieces while dropping down in reed strength to say a 2.5. There are no hard rules, this is just one guideline. You may also choose not to go to more open tips. The choice depends on your sound goals, type of music you play and your personal development.

Not to be offensive....but historically and by reputation, not a very good mouthpiece. I dont know your level of playing but you can probabaly get a lot more out of your horn with a better mouthpiece. At Junkdude.com you can order a Morgan vintage or something to that effect for 80-90 bucks. They are hand faced and you can get a lot of mileage out of it. If your starting out go with something like a 4 or 5 with a mid strength reed 2 or 2.5. The rest is practice.
