Ok, so I've been reading in on quite a few of these threads, but they all seem to shoot off in different directions. I'm gona ask straight out... Which reed is best for Jazz? I've been playing on Java's, but I've heard that the the ZZ's are the modern replacement for them. Also, what aobut V16's? When I first learned about reed type, I believed they shoudl be played for rock, but now I'm hearing they are good for Jazz too. And I'm sure theres a great reed that I havent even mentioned thats out there, waiting to be clipped to my mouthpiece! HELP PLEASE! Advice is needed.

I'll tell you the answer. There isn't one.

There is no "Best" reed for jazz. It is whatever sounds good to you. Getting a good jazz sound can really only be made by emulating cats you like. I can play on a V16, Rico Royal, and a Hemke and still sound like me.

I personally like these on Alto
V16, Lavoz, Vandoren for Jazz-2.5 -3
Hemke, Rico for slow Jazz 2 -2.5
Hemke, Vandoren for Classical 2 -2.5
Lavoz, V16 for Rock or General 2.5 -3

I find that

Lavoz are good, kind of buzzy and bright but have a dark undertone, but not very consitent

V16 are bright and thick and responsive

Vandoren are even and responsive

Hemke sound dark at first then warm and bright but arn't very responsive and wear away quickly.

Rico are really fat sounding and easy to play on and the response is't too bad

Find it by yourself. That's what I did.If someone gives you an advice this is his individual opinion and it's not the answer you need.

When I wanted to find out which reed is the best for me I bought a different brand each time had no reeds anymore...and I haven'T found THE reed for me in five years....:x :x

I'll tell you the answer. There isn't one. i'm gonna go with Gary on this one. There's no best jazz reed. It's all about preference. Personally, I like Rico Slect Jazz reeds...and Plasticovers are great tgoo, although I use them more for Rock 'n Roll.
