View Full Version : Super dark alto piece
i'm looking for a very dark alto piece for classical use. any suggestions? I'm currently playing a rousseau NC4 but it just doesn't feel right, a bit too stuffy.

Try a Caravan. However it's so dark that it almost sounds hollow.
Perhaps the stuffy sound comes from a mouthpiece that is too dark for alto, the lack of embouchure/air support (I don't know how long you've been playing), or the Rousseau you have simply is a dud. Most classical saxophone players like a centered sound on alto.
i've been playing about 7 years. i don't think its my air support (i play tenor and bari too, on pretty open mouthpieces) and i have a pretty tight embouchure. i like it really mellow.

Try a Morgan C sometime. It's like a laid-back version of the Caravan - round and mellow, but easy playing.

I use Selmer Larry Teal for all my alto playing. A lot of players wonder whats goin on with me using it for jazz, but its the only thing that darkens my very, very bright buescher true-tone alto(i still love the horn though)
the LT gives a terrific classical tone, if you dont mind using pretty hard reeds(the tip opening is very closed  )

For classical music I use a Rascher Mpc that is probably the darkest modern mpc avaliable. It produces a dark, mellow, fat sound on my true tone that I think even surpasses a dark tenor.

On my YAS-61, I really like the Vandoren V16 A6M. Nice, dark and mellow. I don't like it at all on my SX90R though.
