View Full Version : Source for vintage latches and lining material?

I'm in the process of redoing a vintage alto case. I need to find a source for old-style latches (the spring-loaded kind that locks with a key). I would prefer brass latches. I would also like to get some heavy-duty velvet similar to original lining (I'm looking for blue but other colors would be acceptable if I can't get blue). If anyone knows of a source for this let me know. I'm still debating whether to finish the work myself or take it to an upholstery shop. There isn't a luggage repair shop around here and two-way postage would really add up.

I found that the padding was nothing but plain cotton batting so I've been able to get something similar at a craft store.

Did you read my reply to you on the old board?

I want to fix up this particular case, not build a new one. It needs a new latch (spring loaded kind that pops up when open). New alto cases are readily available, but most of them don't seem to have much class. I have searched on the internet using several different search engines and I can't come up with a source for this type of latch. This type of latch used to be ubiquitous in the 50's and 60's so I guess I'm going to have to go searching in thrift shops and and junkyards to try to find one; not really my idea of how to spend the day. I'm really surprised that I can't just order a replacement from somewhere. :(

I knew you didn't want to build a new case, but it seemed from your posting on the old board that you were looking on info. how to build up the padding, support, inside materials etc. in the case you had, as well as replace the latches.

I scoured all the hardware catalogues looking for good latches for my new case. You're right, the spring loaded ones seem to be no longer made. The WW&BW catalogue didn't have any either.

For what it's worth, as far as inside fabric goes, upholstry velvet is going to hold up the best. You probably can get it in a blue close to what you're looking for.

Ferree's tools might have what you are looking for. Baed on the pictures in the catalog they have several latches that pop up when open. Some nickle, some brass.

Check with them - very helpful - if they don't have what you want they may be able to point you where you need to go. Badger Case would aslo be another place to go for 0lder hardware.

Also, Badger State Repair might have some older hardware, too.
