View Full Version : A question about Marchin Lyres
I been doing some shopping online for marching lyres that hold up those flip folders things, you know what I'm talking about. Now pardon my ignorance, I haven't used one of those for at least 10 years... and err, is it me or lyres changed A LOT in the past 10 years??
All that I could find on the web don't look like lyres to me, they look like a rectangular holder for the flip folder, but, I'm affraid that I have to ask  how are they supposed to hold onto the instrument??

I've seen what your looking for in most of the music shops I go into. They still look the same to me since my school marching band days. They are made of brass or brass plated. They have the familiar lyre shape with the spring back portion to hold that small music booklet. They have a square rod which slips into a square receiver on your sax and secured with a screw. They cost about 3 or 4 bucks. They haven't changed to me in the last 50 years at least. Unless some company has come up with a new design, yet the lrye holder on the sax would also have to change too. I don't use them anymore. Maybe if you ask around someone may give you one for nothing. Their cheap.
What you describe is exactly what I'm looking for. Strangely, I wasn't able to find those online. I haven't been able to find any locally but I guess that I'm gonna looking. I don't just need one lyre, I need several and for several types of inst.
thanks for your answer :)

The lrye that is shown for alto/tenor on saxmanglen's suggested site is the one that I've always seen used. They should be available at any music store that sells wind instruments. If the're out of them, then they should be able to order some.

www.wwbw.com has a lot of lyres in there. if you click on what instrument you are looking at (i.e. tenor sax) go to the accessories section and it should list the lyres. the clamp ones you saw might have been for brass (i.e. baritone trumpet bones etc)
You might need to shorten or bend the stem on the lyre if your eysight is like mine, but all you need is a pair of plyers and a gorilla for a friend.
I stood in for a friend recently in a parade. I wear trifocal glasses and reading the music was a B-I-T-C-H ! I was swiveling my head all over the place trying to get it in focus!
By the way, Kim, I responded to your new and old e-mail addresses and both were returned. Haven't forgotten ya. Was there a problem for a while?

There is a brand of lyre with black plastic on the music clip part, instead of being all metal. And the flip folder from the same manufacturer has matching depressions such that the plastic clip of the lyre fits into the flip folder perfectly. The folder will not flop around or fall off.
For the rest of it, there is still the old square brass shank that plugs into the socket on your sax. You just have to bend it to suit.
Well how about that... last year I was looking for marching lyres
Gary: I've had trouble with my email recently. I called my internet provider yesterday to give them sone Sh.. and they said that last week there was some congestion on the server which may result in emails comming in late. But the problem is supposed to be fixed.... so they said. I must be crazy or I've had some strange things happening, like receiving emails twice but several days appart :? Internet provider says it's not them, that it must be my new router... Yeah right... Strangely as soon as I hung-up with technical service, I've had like a ton of emails suddently coming in.
The adress at kimcpelletier.com is dead, I killed it. Use the one at musimage instead
