I read on the JodyJazz site that the HR* is based on a Meyer. Anyone tried both? I'd like to no a little more about these pieces.

Hey man I've tried both mouthpieces I have a MEYER 5M and a JJ HR* 6M, and honestly JJ is way better than the meyer, I liked so much the HR* that just 2 days ago I bought a JJ Classic 6. This mouthpieces are made from really good quality materials and the sound it's bigger, warmer and more control than the meyer. I think meyer it's a great mouthpiece but If they dont start changing their products people like Jody will advantage of it with beautiful mouthpieces like this one. You can't fail with a JJ. I'll tell you how's the JJ Classic after I try it. Cheers

I have a Meyer 7 and a JJ HR 7. I prefer the JJ. I just switched from the Meyer in fact. I now am noodling around with the JJ and my metal Link.
The Meyer tended to just be stuffy. I didn't really notice it until I started playing more alto and clarinet, then it drove me nuts. I was also having trouble getting reeds to keep a seal, a recent development.
I tried several JJ HR, Wilkersons and the new JJ metal. I kept comparing them to the Meyer and the JJ HR won hands down. The metal JJ was my second pick until I saw the price tag. ;) I didn't really get into the Wilkerson. But there was a kid in there trying them and she sounded nice on them.

The Meyer might feel better to you though. Try them both side by side. That's the only real way to figure this out. ;)

These modern Meyers just don't sound right if they haven't been worked on. There are a lot of duds on the retail market, hence the need to try several to find a decent one. Even when you find 'the one' that blows away the others you ordered, it's still not perfect - might have issues with the facing curve, table might be jacked up, etc.

For example, I have a Meyer 6M that was a 'best of six' that I tried. It plays well and has decent response/intonation, but is stuffy sounding and doesn't project well. However my Meyer 5M, which I got Theo to fix up, is just on fire and smokes the 6M in the tone dept. If you'd never heard one such piece played, you wouldn't know a 5M could sound like that.. No experience with the JJ HR* (yet).
