I play a Selmer Signet alto('S' brace with left hand bell keys and looks just like a 50's Aristocrat). I want a mpc that will be a good match for this horn and give me a dark sound. I tried the Vandoren V16 but that wasn't it. I was thinking of trying a Bari HR and a Meyer G series. Am I going in the right direction with these pieces? Any other pieces I should try?

Thanks,
BobD

Depends, Classical or Jazz?

I use a Meyer 6 as it is dark enough but stands out and speaks well for a lot of situations. There are louder more raucus mouthpieces.

I use a Caravan Med Chamber for straight classical but prefer a Hite for most everything I normally do and that is Concert band , multiple styles. The Hite Stays dark enough and doesn't get thin up high. I find the wider tip opening is like a Selmer C**.

I don't want a classical piece like a Caravan. I want some edge but with a very fat sound. So I guess I'm thinking large chamber and rollover baffle. Maybe a Meyer large chamber?

Which V16 did you try? The small chamber or medium chamber? I would think the medium chamber model would work well.

Never mind...I just saw your 'for sale' post...A6M...

In that case, I suggest you try a rubber Link in several different tip openings.

If you want some edge try a Meyer small chamber. Nice fat sound that can cut.

My advice: Take a bunch of HR Otto Links (5* is my favorite tip opening) and choose the best one of those. Full, big sound and it projects also nicely. I gave mine to my father for some testing and never got it back 8-) Well, I'm trying to survive with my HR Zinner which is quite different but very nice mouthpiece also.

Ditto on the HR Links. Also, an "undersized" Link refaced to a larger tip opening would get you some extra punch from a higher than normal baffle - yet still retain the characteristic of it's large chamber. Just depends on how much baffle you are looking for.

I've tried a bunch on both my VII & Serie II altos. I have a HR V16 5M that I like ok, bit jazzy, but ok for concert too.....I have an early hard rubber tone edge 6 (mid 70's that Theo Wayne touched up), plays quite well & dark. the old soloists are nice....suggest a D or E. the old Brilhart tonalins can be good too, but you can't trust the tip sizes, they vary a lot. I also have two Florida STM links, a silver 6 & a gold/brass 6* that work well on alto with the silver being the darkest. as for Meyer I would suggest one of the early new ones with the larger chamber....the one that came right after the NY USA model....it's more affordable. I won't mention the ones I've tried & either gave away or sold.....finding a good piece that suits you & your particular horn is an age old quest for all of us...I've "felt" your pain, lol. what works for one of us may not work at all for you, and even now I still find myself tempted by the ebay siren's song in the mouthpiece categories. sigh

I like those S braced Signets! Meyer G or Otto Link HR would be my recommendations. Both usually require some touchup work to play their best.
