I just acquired an alto mouthpiece from a very old Bufffet sax and was wondering if this is a keeper. Anyone know or can direct me to info?
Thanks

These can be great pieces; underrated and undervalued. They're usually pretty closed pieces unless you luck out and find a size 7. Their forte seems to be that they can make a decent match for an otherwise finicky vintage horn. For more information, check out this old ad on Theo's site:

I have some marked K5* that are quite good. They seemed to be a C* substitute in the 40s-50s.

I love the steel ebonites. I have a 5* in my collection.

This 1956 Woodwind ad (http://www.mouthpieceheaven.com/content/vintage-ads/selmer_show005.htm) gives info about the various facings and models. The K facings were "for lead men" – ie, gave a little more cut. (Very little, by our standards today. People's hearing must have been better then.)

Thank you all for your input. I currently use a Meyers Bros. 6M with my alto. This Woodwind Co is a K5. It has a very high vault and by best guess a medium chamber. Haven't tried it yet, I need to clean it.:)

Thanks for that link!!! I always wondered what the K was. I have two that are the same markings but one is different playing from the other!!! Nice even sound on either, but not a live as my Gregory. I also have on oldie that is fat chambered which is nice but a bit too tubby.

Grumps is Great.

We should all send him $5 bucks. Or at least buy him a pizza sometime. Or maybe a reed ...

Odd, I do not see the links to Theo's site on my main home PC. I'll have to try a couple other PCs I use. I see other links on SOTW.

BTW, on a different PC at my day job I see the Links fine. So it is a home PC problem... or is fixed.

For the love of God, send him the $5. Don't sing.

Stick to playing the sax (which I've heard - you're good) and doing overhauls (the results of which I've played - you're darned good).

Just please - no singing.
