I have been playing on an early Babbitt (per Theo from whom I purchased the unmodified piece) Otto Link 6* for about a year. I like it OK but it seems reed picky. Just for kicks, I'm trying out an SR tech Pro (.108). The SR seems more versatile and easier to play in tune. Is it just the "honeymoon period" one seems to experience with most setup changes or does anyone out there have similar experiences, opinions, etc?.
Just wondering,
JoeP

I think the honeymoon is over. After a week on the SR Tech the bottom line is that I like the sound of my Link better. While the SR has less resistance and is therefore "easier" to play, is versatile and less reed picky, I think I still prefer the payoff of patience with my Link's idiosyncrasies.

All that said, I'm not completely certain I'll be sending the SR back to wwbw. Anybody out there use an SR as a backup to their Link, and if so,for what type of playing?

I use a SR Tech Pro 115 as my 'go to' mouthpiece, and I love it. I found out that I could get a thicker, meatier sound when I went up a reed size (I play the new Vandoren ZZ reeds--they're fantastic--and use 3.5's). My 'backup' piece is a Vandoren V-16 T-95, warmer at low volumes, but it thins out when you push it. I've heard some good Links, but unfortunately I've never tried any that weren't either out of tune or very finicky.

That's my experience, for what it's worth. :)

Almost forgot...I use my SR Pro on fusion, soul, R&B, and similar gigs. It's bright enough to cut through the guitars and drums, but has enough body to the sound to not sound nasally (ala Kenny G).

jmz, A V16 T95 is my main piece and I too really like the new Vandoren ZZ reeds. The ZZs did not work as well on my Morgan but the ZZs work VERY well on the V16.

sinkdraiN-- I've generally not had any problems making the ZZ reeds play on anything...but then again, I've never tried a Morgan, is it reed-picky?

I like the T95 for combo gigs, but I have a real hard time making the sound project, whereas the PRO 115 projects really well. Have you encountered anything like this?
