ok I have a question. Why should I compress my sax live, and what ratio should I use if I do.

A little more info might be helpful. If you're playing using a mike and PA channel it depends. If you frequently overdrive the channel, a compressor might smooth out the peaks and valleys and make the soulnd a little more even. Most compressors have a noise gate (which can be irritating if threshold is set too high), which reduces pick up of other things on stage when you're not playing. If you encorporate a delay unit in line, you can alter your sound significantly.

If you're using a compressor with your own unit (pre-amp/amp) you can get interesting altered sounds.

If you're not used to the compressor adjustment possibilities, things can get worse before they get better. In a live/band situation with a good sound tech, he can even out you channel, get more of you in the mix without having to ride your channel very much, but it will alter your dynamics some, depending on how the knobs are adjusted.

As far as ratio, you might start in the 2.5 to 3 range. Start with the threshold at 0, and see what happens when you kick it in (using the minus numbers). This will allow the attacks to be pretty normal, and effect the volume after the attack. will also effect your EQ some. You can the adjust the output volume to get the level where you need it. If the u;nit has a peak limiter, start at about 18, and reduce as you need to control overload distortion. Good luck and have fun! :D
