I just got my selmer Metal Classic and I can't find the right set up for it. On some reeds is gorgeous up high but crappy low, and visa versa on other reeds. I like Vandoren and Hemke down low, but Alexandre Classiques are amazing up high. I want a really powerful and dark classical tone. What do you guys think? Bad mpc? Bad Reeds? What?

Any of you guys used this mouthpiece? Experiences?

Fiddle around with the strength of reed you use. One possible reason some reeds sound really nice up top is because the are on the hard side, while the ones that sound better down low are on the soft side. I had the same problem with my new Selmer Soloist D. So experiment with reed strenghts a bit until you find a good balance between the two.

You might try a fabric or leather ligature. I have always found that the Selmer lig tha tcomes with these doesn't always hold the reed flat and straight.

I have one of these pieces for my VI soprano, and find I get better response with a Rovner ligature rather than the stock Selmer that came with it.

Metal on metal just doesn't want to stay still and I think the fluted sides don't help either. I do have a Harrison for alto that seems to do the trick but these are impossible to find for metal Selmers.
