I have been messing with some mouthpieces on my Couf Superba I Low Bb and Mark VI low A baris and not satisfied (I tried some Lawton's, an RIA, etc). I then noticed that my Rico Jazz Select bari reed fit and sealed quite well on the Java tenor T95 I just bought from Mojobari. I then tried to see if it would fit the neck and it went right on. I then played it and have never had a better sound out of these baris. I can't push the mouthpiece as far in on the cork to play in tune, but it is amazing and sings in the altissimo better than any bari piece I have ever tried (and I am mainly a bari player). Does this make sense? I know the Javas are much longer than many HR tenor pieces and the reed seats quite well. What are any of your thjoughts? Do you know others that play a tenor piece on bari? Thanks for your time.

It may sound like it works, but the chamber volume of a tenor mouthpiece is not big enough for bari. You'll run into intonation problems, at least in the very low and high range.

Yes Ritchie you are very right. To get a good example of this whih is extremely obvious take he whole neck of your bari and put it on the alto. Ive done it. It onlyworks on certain altos. ALl you will here is a bunch of notes that wont work.

Get a runyon with a baffle. It will get the big sound you want and much better intonation than a tenor piece. Mine works great in the lows and the altissimo way up there. I use a tenor reed sometimes on the runyon bari piece and it works quite well. I usually use the Fribracell, Legere or BARI brand synthetic reeds in the tenor size. See if that works for you. Try some different ligs as well, but experiment with just one thing at a time.

If it works, I don't see why you shouldn't use it. If there are intonation or response problems that you can't compensate for, then don't. It doesn't really matter if you're using something intended to do something else if it works. I often use a tenor mouthpiece on alto (although I should point out that you can't do that with just any tenor mouthpiece).
