These days I've been into Marshall a lot.
He used a red Runyon on a Conn.Played so hip with Basie on lead alto.
Anyone else dig him?
Ever hear the record he did on Concord?
Guys like this are a life long study- What do ya'll think?

I got to hear him with Basie in 1965 when I was in high school. He was nice enough to spend some time with me on his breaks. He was using a black Brilhart Ebolin at the time when a lot of other sax players were starting to go to louder, edgier mouthpieces.
When I asked him what kind of mouthpiece he used, he replied, "A chicken **** Brilhart!" We both knew what he meant, and he could cover the sax section with his conservative setup.

Yeah, I started digging Marshall Royal around 1966. I had a Basie album with Marshall playing "The Midnight Sun Never Sets". I love the way he played that tune.

Besides his timeless sound and the masterful way he led a sax section, another thing that was impressive about Marshall Royal is how it appeared that he had the entire Basie book memorized. In all of the times that I saw the Basie band I never noticed him reading a chart.

Poof...that's the sound of Roger "stealing" my thunder. :)
I caught MR with Basie doing a concert around 1960; he had a towel drapped over his music stand, and looked at the back wall of the auditorium the whole concert, not looking at his music once.
He's my model lead alto player. [Not because he has a good memory...]

Yeah, when I saw him he was using the red MP and didn't read a note all night. The section had a huge sound and swung extremely hard. Royal may be the best possible lead-playing role model. Thanks for the reminder T. Price.
